Mindful Awareness Practices (MAPs).
Not only do parents of children with executive functioning - related mental disorders display poorer executive function and
mindful awareness themselves, there are also indications that attention and impulsivity problems in parents negatively affect the effects of parent
training.
A few years ago I was looking for additional
trainings in somatic psychology and learned of
Mindful Awareness in Body - oriented Therapy (MABT).
Trained in MABT and a certified Hakomi Therapist, Elizabeth uses these
mindful, somatic - experience approaches to improve sensory and emotional
awareness and to assist her clients in creating lasting change.
Having attended multiple
trainings on meditation, mindfulness and body
awareness as well as continuing education with the Prison Yoga Project, Cheyenne now brings her expertise to our
Mindful Meditation Group to facilitate the resilience and grounding of our clients.
It draws from neuroscience, positive psychology,
mindful awareness, and social and emotional learning and offers whole - school or regional
training for classroom teachers, a curriculum guide, and a digital option.
In line, we recently found significant direct improvements in
mindful awareness (as measured with the MAAS) in parents of children with ADHD who participated in a
mindful parenting
training (Van der Oord et al. 2011).
Key components include ongoing professional development for all PreK - 12 staff in SEL combined with a focus on cultivating
mindful awareness practices for educators, parents, and students; the development of district and school leaders who provide support for continual
training for new staff; Skills for Life workshops for families; student conflict mediation school programs; and weekly implementation of SEL curriculum.
On the one hand, the lack of improvement in
mindful awareness implies that the MYmind program does not improve children's outcomes by
training them in mindfulness.
We hypothesized that the mindfulness
training would reduce children's and parents inattention and impulsivity / hyperactivity, would improve parental
mindful awareness, would reduce parental stress and overreactivity, but would not affect parental laxness.
Parents (N = 22) completed questionnaires on their child's ADHD and ODD symptoms, their own ADHD symptoms, parenting stress, parental overreactivity, permissiveness and
mindful awareness before, immediately after the 8 - week
training and at 8 - week follow - up.
Neither adolescents, fathers, nor mothers reported a change in their self - rated
mindful awareness and attention after
training, or at 8 - week follow - up.
In
Mindful Parenting (MP)
training, parents learn to pay attention to their children and their parenting in a non-judgmental way, to increase their
awareness of the present moment with their child, and to reduce automatic (negative) reactions to their child (Bögels et al. 2010; Kabat - Zinn and Kabat - Zinn 1997).
