Space scientists are keen to map the concentration of the titanium - dioxide - rich
mineral ilmenite on the moon's surface, says Jim Garvin of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Called TiZir, the joint venture was formed in 2011 with Limb's business contributing the
mineral sands mine and initial processing infrastructure that separates the heavy metals extracted from the sand into materials such as zircon, rutile and
ilmenite.
Mineral Deposits and Eramet are 50 - 50 partners in a business that digs up
minerals sands in Senegal and processes most of what it extracts from those granules at a titanium and iron
ilmenite processing plant at Tyssedal in Norway.
Now Raúl Baragiola and colleagues at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, have tried to reproduce this reaction in the lab by firing protons at crystals of
ilmenite and anorthite, two of the most common lunar
minerals.
The titanium ended up in a
mineral called
ilmenite (FeTiO3) that typically doesn't crystallize until a very late stage, when perhaps only 5 percent of the original melt remains.
