I usually only eat
steel cut oats but will sometimes cook with what is referred to here as «old fashioned» oats that take about 5 - 10
minutes to cook.
Steel cut oats take a little longer to make than instant oats (about 30
minutes), but it's SO worth it.
It took the realization that if I wanted oatmeal on weekday mornings, I was going to either have to a) drag myself out of bed 30
minutes earlier (nope), b) subsist on sub-par instant oatmeal packets (not terrible, but I've spoiled myself with the more healthful and flavorful
steel cut variety) or c) finally see (taste?)
(Substitutions include: Oats,
Steel cut Oats, Bran, Barley, Wheatgerm etc.) Heat for 2
minutes in the microwave or on stove top until oats have softened.
Bring water, vanilla and apple cider to a rolling boil and add
steel cut oats, salt and cinnamon then simmer on low for 20
minutes.
