Mixing droll animation, stock footage and a restrained number
of talking head interviews, the director Penny Lane's biography has all the whimsy
of a tall tale, until a late change in tone surprises with genuine emotion.
The chemistry between the two intellectuals resulted in some
of the most compelling television
of the 20th century, and this film's elegant
mix of archival footage and
talking -
head commentary rivetingly retraces how one heated rivalry sparked an entire culture
of punditry.
On one hand, some
of the first images we see come across as a deep artsy film; and then next thing we are getting is
talking head interviews with reporters and other concerned followers
