A team of
modders working to make the unreleased Halo Online playable have halted work after Microsoft contacted them in an effort to protect its intellectual property.
Man,
these modders work really quickly.

modders work some special magic it's likely going to stay that way.

We as a developer have to find ways to bring something to the game that the
modders can't and
work with them to make games great.
On the one hand we absolutely must consider the many
modders out there who have created outstanding
work that rivals professional developers, sinking untold amounts of hours into crafting amazing new armor, weapons, levels and more for us regular gamers to enjoy.
But let's consider one potential huge positive: though we might see floods of horrible reskins and useless junk, in the long - term we could see more ambitious projects born of
modders who have earned some decent money from previous
work and have put it straight back into creating something even better.
In fact, some
modders have been
working on it through a PC project over the last few years.
I see nothing wrong with hard -
working modders being allowed to earn some cash from their creations, and indeed wholly support that concept.
Valve has taken the big step of allowing
modders to sell their
work via the Steam Workshop, letting them decide whether to have it available for free or to set a specific price, or just let people pay what they want.
The
modders do the
work using a game that isn't Valve's, and in return Valve take the vast majority of the money.
That's why
modders have stepped in to make it happen, and they even went the extra mile and added in some new voice
work for Zelda to go along with her new moves!
In fairness, though, Valve have at least included an option to share revenue with other users for instances of
modders user other people's
work with the second party's approval.
If a
modder believes he or she should get # 5.00 for their
work, for example, they would actually have to charge gamers # 12.50 in order to get that sum.

After this,

Why do
modders now feel so entitled to make money off their
work?
Creator Etienne Godbout has been
working on it for four years and while there are still some bugs, and it's definitely a beta, it's an impressive effort from a lone
modder.
The detail
work from
modders is incredible and if I had a good enough PC, I'd be all over this.
Fortunately,
modders are still
working overtime to try to fix them.
At least put a small team on it so that your company can gain some first hand knowledge and experience of the Oculus Rift, I'm sure some Ubisoft interns /
modders would love to
work on this.
However, it appears that's not the only texture pack that
modder GPUnity is currently
working on.
