The individual must train the mind and induce
a mode of consciousness.
And yet, in
some mode of consciousness or other, our minds would have to make contact with this encompassing purpose, or it with us, if we are to talk about it at all.
What would
this mode of consciousness be, and what would be its relation to scientific knowledge?
This is accomplished by the statesmen, whose
mode of consciousness is properly that of «universality.»
But Whitehead does maintain a general correlation between one's economic condition and one's
mode of consciousness.
This mode of consciousness, according to Whitehead, is displayed primarily by the fortunate classes, whose economic position allows them the freedom to reflect upon the inherited values, laws, and customs.
Rather, the sense of a deeper, purposively ordering presence in nature would reside in the nonscientific
mode of consciousness that we have called faith.

a mode of consciousness by which we at the human level of emergence might become aware, in a non - controlling, non-comprehensive sort of way, of possible higher purposive principles and patterns of influence operative in the cosmos.
This mode of consciousness is «present as a kind of feeling for life, in man's pre-scientific consciousness and has as such impressed itself on modern man's everyday experience of life».1 As a result «man's consciousness of his own identity has become weaker and more damaged in the course of human progress.
How this metamorphosis takes place; how a force existing as motion, heat, or light can become
a mode of consciousness; how it is possible for aerial vibrations to generate the sensation we call sound, or for the forces liberated by chemical changes in the brain to give rise to emotion, — these are mysteries which it is impossible to fathom.
Meaning, which requires expression through the narrative
mode of consciousness, appears to dualistic thinking as the concoction of our alienated subjectivity.
He concludes: «The point is that a mystical idea is a product of the conceptual intellect, whereas a mystical experience is a nonintellectual
mode of consciousness» (TM 5).
But even this formulation suggests that there is a purely receptive
mode of consciousness, a mode which Hall certainly thinks should be given greater importance even if it is not entirely «substituted» for the «active mode.
That would indeed be a very different
mode of consciousness!
But once the reflective consciousness existed, it embodied an immense new value in itself, so that a psychic life aimed at its own heightened richness tended to aim at the enhancement and strengthening of this new
mode of consciousness.
In Farley's case the circle is broken by introducing a subjective construal of habitus, and hence of theology, as
a mode of consciousness.
It is clear from his autobiographical statements that Paul was able to move freely from one
mode of consciousness to another, from the left hemisphere to, the right, and back again — from law to grace, from mystical experience to ethical evaluation.

Although at times Scenes seems to be administering the physic

consciousness movement in rather heavy doses, the film is too complex to be dismissed as a celebration
of «How to Save Your Own Life» in the
mode of Erica Jong, Jerry Rubin or Gail Sheehy.
The split between rational and mythic discourse which has characterized our recent cultural history is very dangerous for it impoverishes both
modes of thought.13 It is one
of the possible benefits
of the current new appreciation
of the meaning and function
of myth that we may be able to rescue it from the realm
of unconscious fantasy where it always continues to operate, often in dark and devious ways, and restore it once again to its creative role in human
consciousness.
In man we have seen that symbolization superseded organization by signals as the predominant
mode of significantly organized
consciousness, and that this constituted reflective
consciousness.

mode of pre - or subconscious perception — exhibited in the behavior
of bodily organs and tissues, manifest and directly observable also throughout the sentient but nonhuman world, and bearing a close resemblance to William James's «stream
of consciousness» or «blooming, buzzing confusion» — upon which our conscious knowledge
of the «causal nexus» may be grounded.
Nothing is more important in Hegel's logic than its purely and totally forward movement, this is its greatest innovation in the perspective
of all other logics, just as at no other point is the modern
consciousness itself more clearly distinct from virtually every other
mode or form

Again, even if what is thus apprehended is
of the same kind, the distinction is great enough — has enough breadth — to require
consciousness to function by

of revelation, a natural and ineradicable experience

of a promising God.

of subception discussed by Rogers and selective inattention reported by H. S. Sullivan demonstrate that it is possible for the organism as a whole to conform to or experience events that the higher conscious processes will fail to detect.23 Hence, the inhibiting and habit - ridden structures
of consciousness are transcended by perception in the adverbial
mode.
Perception in the
mode of presentational immediacy locates it in clear
consciousness there - now in the place where the tooth's aching occurred a fraction
of a second ago.
Heat and light, being
modes of motion, «phosphorescence» and «incandescence» are phenomena to which
consciousness has been likened by the production - theory: «As one sees a metallic rod, placed in a glowing furnace, gradually heat itself, and — as the undulations
of the caloric grow more and more frequent — pass successively from the shades
of bright red to dark red (sic), to white, and develope, as its temperature rises, heat and light, — so the living sensitive cells, in presence
of the incitations that solicit them, exalt themselves progressively as to their most interior sensibility, enter into a phase
of erethism, and at a certain number
of vibrations, set free (dégagent) pain as a physiological expression
of this same sensibility superheated to a red - white.»
This may be granted if we are talking about mentality in the
mode of human
consciousness.
In an electron, for example, the moments
of memory, enjoyment and anticipation would not add up to «
consciousness,» but they would at least count as a
mode of «mentality,» in our extended sense
of the term.
Science is a
mode of knowing adequate to grasp what lies below
consciousness in the hierarchy.
