I confess that I have become somewhat blasé about the range of exciting — I think revolutionary is probably more accurate — technologies that we are rolling out today: our work in genomics and its translation into varieties that are reaching poor farmers today; our
innovative integration of long — term and multilocation trials with crop
models and modern IT and communications technology to reach farmers in ways we never even imagined five years ago; our vision to create a C4 rice and see to it that Golden Rice reaches poor and hungry children; maintaining productivity gains in the face of dynamic pests and pathogens; understanding the nature of the rice grain and what makes for good quality; our many
efforts to change the way rice is grown to meet the challenges of changing rural economies, changing societies, and a changing climate; and, our extraordinary array of partnerships that has placed us at the forefront of the CGIAR change process through the Global Rice Science Partnership.
As well as being the first time in recent memory that meals have been made from scratch in D.C. Public Schools, the program represents the culmination of
innovative efforts by D.C. Central Kitchen to build a successful economic
model around concepts that don't normally associate in the public mind: local farming, job training for the down - and - out, and feeding the indigent.

The federal government has a critical investment role to play in 1) supporting the replication and scale - up of the best providers through its grant programs; 2) improving access to low - cost public facilities for charter schools through its own funds and by leveraging existing public - school space; 3) pushing states and local districts toward more equitable funding systems for all public school students, including those in charter schools; and 4) supporting
efforts to create early - stage,
innovative, and scalable
models that incorporate greater uses of learning technology.
Since 2000, the foundation has invested $ 2 billion in
innovative school
models, improved systems for data and accountability, and school district
efforts.
SMB: We should take a page from the successful, ongoing
efforts that address the lingering lag in girls» and women's participation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields and leadership positions: 1) mentoring and role -

models focusing on personal needs are most effective in producing educational change (Persichette, 1998; Strudler & Wetzel, 1999), effective technology - related faculty development
efforts enable teacher educators to enhance their instruction (Cooper & Bull, 1997), and faculty members must receive support when they need it as opposed to when a training session is offered (Ring, Cilesiz, Ali, & Chen, 2002).
City - based education organizations, or «harbormasters» and others who coordinate
efforts to improve education within a city to incubate new school
models; work to attract talented entrepreneurs to develop break - the - mold innovations; and build an infrastructure of charter school supports that allow operators to focus more energy spent on
innovative educational approaches, not operations.
