The no nonsense, undramatic, linear delivery from really low - down in the rev range that we're used to from
modern turbocharged engines, does not characterise the 1750cc
unit in the 4C.
It's also the same
unit that powers the Audi R8 V10 + — in an age of widespread downsizing and
turbocharging this is one of the great
modern performance car engines.
The 2 - liter
unit fitted with a single - scroll turbocharger is continually adjusting its compression ratio (in the 8:1 and 14:1 range) thus bringing the best out of two worlds: the power of a
turbocharged 2 - liter engine combined with the torque and efficiency levels seen in a
modern four - cylinder diesel.
Hopefully it doesn't come to this, but if and when this engine gets replaced by a smaller,
turbocharged unit, I'll probably be among those pining for the classic, naturally - aspirated VQ that these
modern Zs have become known for.
The 1.5 - liter
turbocharged engine (which only has direct injection but no more Vtec) is a pretty good
unit by
modern standards.
