The intriguing thing to me about working in agricultural
biotechnology at this moment is watching how a multitude of subdisciplines such as
plant physiology, biochemistry, genetics,
molecular biology, bioinformatics, and
molecular and conventional breeding are blending into one big continuum where the lines begin to blur.
I had this vague, naive notion that if we could genetically improve
plants with the new tools of
molecular biology, we would find a way to make
biotechnology relevant to agriculture.
We are fortunate to have an outstanding community of researchers in this area covering the range from
molecular biotechnology, fungal and
plant genetics,
plant biochemical and developmental biology through to animal developmental biology.
The theme of the meeting is «From our roots in vitro to the future of
plant biotechnology» and we are inviting experts on a range of
plant biotechnology topics, including the fields of in vitro biology, gene editing, synthetic biology, epigenetics and
molecular farming to give keynote addresses.
We hope our content will be of particular interest to industrial or academic scientists active in R&D in
molecular biotechnology, gene transfer and expression, applied microbiology, environmental
biotechnology, biofuels and bioenergy, nanotechnology, bioprocessing, chemical
biotechnology, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, nucleic acid therapeutics and vaccines,
plant biotechnology, and patenting and regulatory issues.
After a postdoc in
plant molecular biology at the Rockefeller University, she worked in Washington DC as an AAAS Risk Policy Fellow at the USDA and then as a study director for several reports on
biotechnology and bioterrorism policy at the NAS / NRC.
