The basic technology that Nicolelis and colleagues used to extract instructions for movement from the mishmash of
monkey brain signals isn't new, says Jose Contreras - Vidal, a biomedical engineer at the University of Houston in Texas.

When the program detected a pattern in the
monkey's
brain signalling the intention to move, it moved the virtual hands in the corresponding direction.
Scientists already employ fMRI, which uses changes in blood flow as a proxy for
brain activity, to scan the
brains of restrained
monkeys, but Berns wanted to train dogs to willingly enter the machine and learn simple things, such as associating a hand
signal with a reward of a hot dog, all the while staying still enough to collect interpretable
brain scans.
Once the neuronal model had developed an accurate level of prediction the researchers switched the control of the cursor from the joystick to the robotic arm, which in turn was controlled by the
monkey's
brain signals.
Andy Coghlan's report of
brain signals from
monkeys being used to recreate photos of faces is potentially important for many reasons (10 June, p 14).
The Duke researchers, working at the Center for Neuroengineering, have previously built BMIs to capture and transmit the
brain signals of individual rats,
monkeys, and even human subjects to artificial devices.
While this was happening, the researchers measured the activity in two parts of the
monkeys»
brains, the parietal lobe and the frontal lobe, which is the next place neural
signals are sent.

To know for sure whether the
brain's conflict
signals and pupil size caused the
monkeys to perform better requires further study.
Other scientists have connected the
brains of rats and
monkeys, and transmitted
brain signals from a human to a rat, using electrodes inserted into animals»

To know for sure whether the
brain's conflict
signals and pupil size caused the
monkeys to perform better requires further study. The dACC doesn't directly control pupil size, but it connects to another region of the
brain that does.
Prior to the study, scientists had observed synchronous patterns of electrical activity between the two circuit hubs after a
monkey saw an object, but weren't sure if the
signals actually represent such short - term visual memories in the
brain.
Building on past work, scientists create wheelchairs controlled directly by electrical
