Throughout its long history, AT&T has had many subsidiaries (including the Bell Telephone Company), a government sanctioned
monopoly on phone services, and has been the largest phone service provider several times during the last century.
My tenure at the company predated the ubiquitous adoption of the mobile
phone, so the stodgy telco primarily focused
on providing landline connectivity with poor customer and quality of
service metrics which can be a common occurrence for
monopoly - type industries.
