It purports to be about things and persons within a distinctly
moral mode of being.

The basic goods
are supplemented by
moral principles, sometimes called «
modes of responsibility.»
The AAC monograph, for instance, identifies nine «methods and processes,
modes of access to understanding and judgment» (ICC 15) that it thinks
are essential to know: logical analysis, verbal literacy, numerical understanding, historical awareness, scientific method, informed and responsible
moral choice, art appreciation and experience, international and multicultural experiences, and study
of one field in depth.
Every people has its culture, whether primitive or advanced, and this culture
is discerned in the folkways and
moral standards, forms
of family life, economic enterprises, laws and
modes of dealing with lawbreakers, forms
of recreation, religion, art, education, science, and philosophy that constitute the social aspects
of human existence as contrasted with the bare biological fact
of living.

be admitted that there
are certain potential vices to virtue ethics even in its minimalist
mode, i.e., even when it does not try to crowd out the legitimate insights
of deontologists and utilitarians (e.g., from the deontological side, that there
are limits — deontoi — regarding what any virtuous person can
be permitted to do, and, from the utilitarian side, that there
are calculations which
are relevant regarding many
moral decisions the virtuous person must make).
Any language adequate for theology must
be of a very considerable breadth and expressive power; it must include
modes of expression for mathematics and science, for describing our
moral behavior, our values, our hopes, fears, and loves, and so on.
It
is needed because once again our technology has outpaced our traditional
modes of moral reasoning.
But, if we gag the inner cynic in me, it bears noting that there
's a
moral / ethical reason to attack someone who gasses civilians, in certain ethical frameworks (where for example, chemical weapons
are qualitatively different than other
modes of attacking civilians).
