A humble herdsman of Tekoa, he appeared one day at the royal shrine of Bethel and, with a religious earnestness that moves us even yet as we read it, began to denounce the spiritual
shallowness, the exploitation of the poor by the rich, the bribery, sexual indulgence, and general
moral laxity which he saw all about him.
