Both the continental shelf and the
abyssal plain have been surveyed
more or less extensively.
1) the atmosphere (which can also be subdivided into northern and southern hemispheres, and even into Hadley Cells) all with fairly short time constants 2) the upper ocean — time constant on the order of years to decades 2a) the biosphere — time scale from 1 year to decades and even centuries and millennia for some processes 3)
abyssal ocean (timescale of many decades to ~ a century or
more) 5) the geosphere — timescale of millennia to eons.
But these
abyssal deeps aren't at 2000 metres —
more like 5,000 to 8,000 metres.
The expansion of the Argo program over the next few years will add even
more floats that go deeper
more consistently, reducing uncertainty even further and filling in the details at even
abyssal depths.
That's nice but I remain
more interested in how that heat gets out of
abyssal ocean not how it gets into it.
