In an era of Big
Data, we can learn much
more by quantifying the learning process through increased use of formative
assessments: Are students learning — and if so, how?
Much
more data can be generated by utilizing formative
assessment tools during the learning process than by looking at outcomes in the form of summative
assessments delivered at the end of lessons.
Now that we have a national curriculum, I do wonder whether rather than relying so heavily on NAPLAN it would be better to look at making sure that we perhaps increase moderation and get
more consistency around the
assessments that we use within our schools to assess the outcomes of the curriculum that the school students are working on, and perhaps look at report card
data and at strengthening some of those things.
Using
more recent
data, a report by the Center on Education Policy concludes that reading and math achievement as measured by state
assessments has increased in most states since 2002 and that there have been smaller but similar patterns in NAEP scores.
Another lesson is that ample time must be taken to analyze the implications of student
assessment results, to plan for how instruction should be modified accordingly, and to act on those conclusions; otherwise, the
data become
more information that gathers dust on the shelf.
