These points are even
more valuable when you consider that all Southwest
seats are
available for
award bookings regardless of date or flight.
Scott McCartney, Travel Editor of The Wall Street Journal, discusses how the airlines now make
more money from their frequent flyer programs than they do from normal airline operations, and which airlines are the best and worst at making
award seats available to passengers.
To keep your
awards seat from disappearing while you're waiting for your points to transfer, put your reservation on hold before transferring (if the program allows it), or make sure that there are multiple
seats available on your intended flight or that there is
more than one flight
available on the same airline.
When we announced the SkyMiles 2015 program we committed to making

Increased
award availability When we announced the SkyMiles 2015 program we committed to making
more award seats available at the lowest prices and since the start of 2015 we have expanded
award availability at the lowest prices by greater than 50 %.
It's rare to find
more than two business
award seats available on the same flight, but I've often seen four and six economy
seats available.
Award seats are
available on these routes for those who would rather not part with cash but, if you're using United Miles (or Miles &
More miles) you'll only be getting around 1.0 cents / mile in value:
The bigger aircraft will have
more DeltaOne
seats available (possibly good for
award travel) and the exit rows are in completely different places on both aircraft so check your
seat assignments if you already have a flight booked.
Also, most airlines will highly restrict the number of
award seats made
available at the lowest mileage levels, and offer many
more options if you are willing to pay
more miles.
Flying Blue was even
more restrictive only making its
award seats available ten months before travel.
Assuming the holiday rush cuts down on
available award seats on United, you're likely to get pushed to a higher tier with your United miles, which could mean spending 40,000 miles or
more on a domestic fare instead of 25,000.
It seems that if you hold a Chase United MileagePlus Explorer card and log in to United.com and search for
award seats, you will see
more seats available than someone without the card.
Or you can wait and hope that
more seats open up, since airlines are continually adjusting their inventory of
available award tickets.
That's the same as United and a bit
more than American, though you may have a hard time finding
available award seats on those carriers.
This type of dynamic pricing will mean
more awards available to the public since you'll be able to book any
available seat (on Flying Blue airlines like KLM, Air France, etc.).
In announcing the new earning system, Delta promised that it would make
available more award seats at the lowest levels.
To evaluate Delta's promise to make
more seats available at the lowest mileage levels, I picked a few routes and performed
award searches both before and after the new year for flights in May and June of 2015.
ClassicFlight
awards are capacity controlled and Market Fare
awards offer access to
more seats for variable mileage levels, and are only
available on Air Canada and Air Canada Express.
Hopefully they'll be
more available seats after March because I think that cheap
award prices and no availability is worse than an expensive
award chart with some availability.
With a single program, miles will be able to be used both for saver
awards and the
more expensive
awards that give you any
available seat regardless of airline (currently that can only be done with US Airways miles on US Airways, and American miles on American).
Saver
awards require fewer miles but have limited availability and come with
more restrictive fare conditions; Advantage
awards require
more miles as there are
more seats available and have less restrictive fare conditions.
However, their same day connection, or direct flights from Paris to NY are
available as
awards seats but for
more miles.
But in recent years, travel rewards experts have lowered their valuations of AAdvantage miles as the airline began requiring
more miles for
award seats, and made fewer
seats available at the lowest mileage levels.
If there is a
seat available under standard
award (still coach), will I be able to make the change without paying
more miles?
High level airline elite status comes with many valuable perks such as free domestic first class upgrades (when
available), elite security lines, waived fees (such as free checked bags, and free changes to
award bookings), improved availability of
award seats, and
more.
In addition, large families will usually be frustrated in their attempts to find
more than two or three
award seats available at the lowest mileage levels.
There's still a number of days with 2, 4 or
more first class
award seats available, so book them while you can!
Dear Tracey, United frequent flier miles can be a valuable commodity, because it is easy to search for
award availability on United's website and because United tends to have
more award seats available than its competitors.
Besides keeping fixed prices in place for domestic Saver
awards, United said it will also make
more seats available at those prices.
