I have a totally speculative pet hypothesis: this was the early days of the industrial revolution and much
more black soot was being produced by coal fires in the cities.

The process also creates tiny bits of
soot, called
black carbon, and traces of harmful substances, known as brown carbon, which together cause
more global warming per unit weight than other human - associated carbon sources.

more indirect, but not for that reason ultimately not effective approaches must be developed, including «demonstration» projects which show that people working together an have a positive effect on certain contributors to warming, including
black soot produced by millions of stoves that use dung for fuel.
According to the scientist conducting the study, the
soot — which comes from the Chindia belt, as well as the Western world — and which is
black, absorbs heat from the sun
more readilly than white ice, thereby accelerating the warming and melting of the glaciers even
more than the Greenhouse effect.

The
black soot soaks up heat and when the snow gets dirty it melts
more quickly and, at such high altitudes, the effect is magnified.
But if a little
more energy is absorbed, then CO2 is acting like a little
black soot in the atmosphere and it will, in turn, radiate
more toward space as a
black box would from the added heat and this might compensate for the change in albedo.
They concede that some of the

Making diesel an even
more attractive candidate for attack is the fact that reducing much of its
black carbon emissions might simply be a matter of upgrading old,
soot - spewing engines with newer technology.
It's even

For instance, Bond et al. report that
black carbon aerosol, or
soot, is second only to carbon dioxide as the substance emitted by human activity that has the greatest warming influence on the climate — contributing a quarter (or perhaps even a bit
more) to the current overall anthropogenic warming effect.
With that comes
more black carbon air pollution from ships —
soot to you and me — and, that means already disproportionately high levels of warming will increase and with those,
more ice melting.

A lot of folks, including myself, think that the recent melting of Arctic sea ice and rising Arctic temperatures is
more attributable to Asian
black carbon pollution than to CO2 and greenhouse gas warming (particularly since similar warming and sea ice melting is not seen in the Antarctic, where there is not a problem with
soot pollution).
That is 227 million tonnes of carbon per year and considered to be
more than averagely harmful because of the
black carbon (
soot) component.
