Adolescent information
management strategies are a primary means by which parents gain knowledge about
diabetes, which may facilitate
more effective
management.
More specifically, in families where no one assumes responsibility for
diabetes management, children were in worse metabolic control, a finding that is consistent with that of Anderson et al. (1990).
We recruited mothers for our sample because evidence suggests that the mother is generally the primary caregiver responsible for the child's
diabetes management, and mothers typically report
more diabetes - related distress than fathers (Whittemore, Jaser, Chao, Jang, & Grey, 2012).
Results Across ethnic groups, adolescent - reported mother and father acceptance were associated with better
diabetes management, whereas mother - reported conflict was associated with poorer
diabetes management and
more depressive symptoms.
Such findings suggest a need to
more fully examine whether and how family factors that have been consistently associated with
diabetes management among Caucasians may generalize to Latinos or other ethnic minorities.
However, adolescents reporting
more critical, negative, unsupportive relationships with their parents regarding their
diabetes management had worse metabolic control, a finding that is consistent with that of previous studies.
These findings ran counter to our hypothesis that relationship quality variables would be
more strongly associated with
diabetes management among Latinos because of the central role of family in Latino culture.
Further research into the source of conflict using measures with better psychometric properties and that are

diabetes - related conflict is needed to
more precisely investigate if, and in what ways, pump use might address family relationships specific to issues of illness and its

Thus, as expected, having two caregivers with high collaborative involvement was associated with
more parental responsibility for

Updated adherence measures, similar to those developed by the
Diabetes Research in Children Network (DirecNet) Study Group (2005), should be used as they should
more accurately address the complexity of modern T1D
