I don't idealize the ancient diet, because we can't really fully know it, but realistically I'd have to guess that besides
plants (and bugs), like someone else mentioned, it probably included whatever else was
easy to procure, (considering it wouldn't make sense to expend
more calories hunting down food than you would receive from consuming it) like mussels, clams, crabs, snails, some fish, maybe small animals, but I bet the taste for meat came from observing REAL carnivores consuming flesh, and maybe leaving carcasses behind.
Some foods which contain carotenoids or lycopene (orange vegetables and tomatoes) actually become healthier during the cooking process because the heat breaks down the cell wall and allows the nutrients in the
plant to become
more bioavailable and
easier to absorb by our bodies.
Going completely meat and dairy - free isn't for everyone, but eating
more plant - based meals is healthy, cheap, and surprisingly
easy.
If you're accustomed to eating with intention and discretion, adding
more plant - based dishes will actually be really
easy for you!
