As we approach the end of the year and enter awards season, get ready for
more excellent films.

An interesting
film, with a little
more sobriety and a
more elaborate development, would have been
excellent.

excellent and because it was it allowed the universe to expand slowly into something
more.
He is
excellent at capturing lost moments of Martin's childhood and then reintroducing them at key moments in the
film to add a little
more weight.
Aided by an
excellent screenplay and assured direction from Nicole Holofcener, Lovely and Amazing is a
film that plays for catharsis and empathy and achieves a good draught of both, content to leave expeditions into stickier climes to
more serious - minded
films.
It's escapist entertainment with a genuine heart and playfulness and when it's called upon to be exciting, it has some
excellent set - pieces that Spielberg is
more than able to handle.The late Melissa Mathison's screenplay has a tendency to wander and the
film could have been tighter but the visual effects are astonishing and Rylance and Clement really deliver the goods in the acting stakes.
While Brolin is as good as ever and Connelly is
excellent, these scenes significantly dampen the flow of what should've been a much
more action - packed action

In his
excellent Grantland piece, Wesley Morris draws an eerie parallel between Trayvon Martin and Oscar Grant, but
more to the point, Ryan Coogler's
film.
It promises to be absolutely bonkers, but crucially, the
excellent Lenny Abrahamson (the much - praised «What Richard Did,» the
film that landed up - and - comer Jack Reynor the lead in «Transformers 4 «-RRB- is at the helm, so there should be
more than going on than just madness.
Adam Driver,
more of a wild card as the
film's villain and heir apparent to Darth Vader, is also
excellent, tempering his intimidation with the right sort of confliction to draw the audience in.
Though it can technically be labeled as a time travel
film, «Safety Not Guaranteed» is
more about its characters» relationships than the veracity of the sci - fi premise, and that's thanks to Derek Connolly's
excellent script and the fantastic cast.
Fox gave Bryan Singer money to finish the longer version, so there's no noticeable difference in the new footage, and the
film looks and sounds
excellent, though some sequences look
more digitally shot than others.
She gives a natural performance which we rarely see at such a young age and this holds the whole
film together; which is impressive considering the other
excellent performances seen from her
more experienced colleagues.
As if she still needs to prove how consummately
excellent she is, Cotillard tacks on some
more buzz scenes to her flashy resume and gets away with claiming the
film's most coherent (and therefore effective) monologues.

film set in small - town South Africa from Oliver Hermanus, Diep Hoang Nguyen's beautiful debut, FLAPPING IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, a wry, weird socially probing take on the teen pregnancy scenario that focuses on a girl whose escape from village life to pursue an urban education has her frozen in mid-flight; LUCIFER, Gust Van den Berghe's thrillingly cinematic tale of Lucifer as an angel who visits a Mexican village,
filmed in «Tondoscope» — a circular frame in the centre of the screen; the European premiere of KOTHANODI a compelling, unsettling fairytale from India; veteran Algerian director Merzak Allouache's gritty and delicate portrait of a drug addicted petty thief in MADAME COURAGE; Radu Muntean's
excellent ONE FLOOR BELOW, which combines taut, low - key realism with incisive psychological and ethical insights in a drama centering on a man, his wife and a neighbor; and QUEEN OF EARTH, Alex Ross Perry's devilish study of mental breakdown and dysfunctional power dynamics between female best friends, starring Elisabeth Moss.
This is an exciting
film, made
more so by the editing and cinematography, and the
excellent performances.
Making things even
more astounding is that it is Cretton's second feature
film, a terrific start to his career but also an
excellent piece of work one could retire on.
The
film is led by the
excellent pairing of Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, which is
more than enough to put tickets in our hands.
Donald Glover of course is
excellent as Lando and I really liked Ehrenreich's performance as Han, a much
more innocent take on the character than Harrison Ford's in the original
films, but a charming one nonetheless.
Ridley Scott wisely plays it very low - key from the get - go, leaving the
film to play out in the
more than capable hands of his actors and he's rewarded with three
excellent performances.
Jennifer Lawrence's performance is at once deeply personal and
excellent at conveying the
film's
more grandiose concerns.

Jonathan Demme's buoyant mid-Eighties yuppie road movie is, in retrospect, maybe the key American
film of its era along with Blue Velvet (also 1986, but Blue Velvet was
more popular), but despite
excellent reviews very few people went to see it.
But the beauty of Jonathan Glazer's
film is how unfamiliar the whole sci - fi element feels (visually and sonically — Mica Levi's score is
excellent), while the setting of drab, rainy contemporary Scotland couldn't feel
more familiar.
The
excellent score, once again by frequent collaborator Jonny Greenwood, is
more tame and restrained than his often cacophonous and percussive work in previous
films.
Blu - ray Highlight: The 30 - minute documentary «Between Good and Evil» is an
excellent retrospective on making the movie, featuring interviews with various cast and crew, as well as a few Kubrick experts, about everything from the casting process, to
filming in East London, to the director's notoriously long shooting schedules and much
more.
Tom Hiddlestone continues to prove why Loki is Marvel's greatest asset, because as soon as he enters the
film, it gets a lot
more interesting, thanks in part to his
excellent chemistry with Chris Hemsworth.
Tonally it owes
more to Rowan Woods's
excellent drama The Boys rather than other Australian crime
films like The Square, Gettin» Square or The Hard Word and yet it still follows the conventions of a crime drama to result in a complex and gripping piece of cinema.
MUSTANG A
more socially significant Virgin Suicides, and
excellent feature
film debut from Turkish director Deniz Gamze Ergüven.
Less really is
more with this
excellent collection of
films with running times of 90 minutes or less, available to stream right now at SBS On Demand.
Whereas «Fast Five» was
more of an «Ocean's Eleven» - type crime caper, «Fast & Furious 6» feels like a straight - up action
film, jam - packed with a series of
excellent set pieces that somehow manage to outdo the previous movies in excess and sheer ridiculousness.
I'm just relieved I've been able to enjoy another
excellent year at Sundance, see this many
films, and return so invigorated for
more.
Deadpool is sort of a lock at the moment as he is seemingly posed to be an

excellent supporting cast include Peter Sarsgaard as Bobby, Greta Gerwig as Jackie's confidant Nancy (the first
film I've seen Gerwig in where she wasn't annoyingly OTT in every scene) and John Hurt in a role made all the
more touching by is recent departure from us.
