And before Toronto even kicks off, the Venice and Telluride
film festivals will take place, debuting
films we're sure to hear
more about in the coming months.
More than 32 % of this year's
films were made by women, a
festival high and you could feel the difference everywhere you went.
Two other
films I have to mention as runner - ups: Zhang Yimou's Coming Home made me cry
more than any other
film at the
festival, and the last shot is heartbreaking, but oh so beautiful.
Plenty of actors have
more than one
film at Toronto, but this year Denis Villeneuve joins the elite group of directors to have two
films play the
festival.
As the
festival gets closer,
more and
more films are being hinted at for a premiere in France (though Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu's Birdman with Michael Keaton won't be one of them).
Few would have bet that «Inglourious Basterds» would turn into the
festival's Oscar MVP (they might have been
more inclined to say Jane Campion's «Bright Star,» but that
film went on to only earn one nomination), or that
festival opener «Up» was a sure thing for a Best Picture nomination.
With the abundance of
film festivals, not to mention sites like Vimeo and YouTube, short
films are becoming even
more popular for young filmmakers who wish to get their movies out there.
After I saw it at the Toronto
film festival last September — where Rudolph and Willis said they were proud of having made it even if nobody saw it — it received nominal runs in New York and Los Angeles, cities where viewers and critics are regarded by distributors as being
more demographically significant than those in Chicago, and then early this year it came out on video.

film is a structureless, rambling celebration of Glastonbury's boozy, hedonistic, liberated, political and frequently bonkers character rather than of the actual music: great if you were at the party, presumably less great if you weren't.
Now in its fifth year, the growing event is
more a
film, food and wine
festival.
2017's
festival also reinforced its status as the home of politically charged cinema with a line - up that addressed the refugee crisis (and a bold new step into the world of virtual reality cinema), dystopian social experiments, mental health, and AIDS activists: there were
