Her latest Polish film, the tough, unsentimental In Darkness, brings together themes from two of the most highly regarded
movies about the second world war, Wajda's Kanal,

lives, made it seem like a product of profound stupidity, even
more of an artistic bottom - feeder than the Farrelly's shaky debut, Dumb & Dumber.
As someone that did nt know anything
about the real
life history of Edith Piaf, I found the
movie somewhat disjointed - hopping around chronologically made it
more of a challenge to understand events.
Perhaps if the film had concentrated
more on introspective elements, such as Rashad and his internal difficulties in growing from a boy into a man, instead of constantly distracting us with side stories — Esquire's quest for the path to success, New New's fence - sitting between the ghetto and the mansion, Ant's seduction into materialism, and the roller skating competition that never really materializes — it would have been a
more compelling
movie about Atlanta's lower class areas, and the ups and downs of
life there.
Put together, this is one of the great dialogue comedies, with far
more verbal acuity than most
movies about campus
life — or most
movies, period.
I won't give any
more away - and, honestly, it's not as if the film suddenly sells out and provides group hugs and
life lessons to everyone - but the nastiness that I liked most
about the
movie begins to fade.
The
movie doesn't say anything
about living with your shortcomings that hasn't been said
more interestingly before — think The Wrestler or Sideways.

The film is so beholden to the moods and manners of Malick that even its
more estimable elements (the acting, the cinematography, the very conceit of making a
movie about Abraham Lincoln that focuses exclusively on what's ostensibly the least interesting part of his
life, sort of a Younger Mr. Lincoln) are diffused into the ether.
Bilge's lucid summary of the twisty - turny documentary Kate Plays Christine — in which director Robert Greene follows around a real -
life actress while she rehearses for a fictional
movie about the
life of a real person — got me thinking: Aren't we starting to need
more words for the bounteously proliferating forms of nonfiction filmmaking besides just documentary?
The
more I try to make the character come to
life in the
movie and depict what he's really
about deep inside, that's when the
movie tends to become violent.
It's a wish - fulfillment fantasy meant to draw single moms and frustrated wives to the theater, but they deserve a
more incisive
movie about redefining gender roles than the two male writer - directors have the ability or
life experience to speak toward.
But while there isn't much to distinguish Born To Be Blue's dramatic stakes from any number of stories
about self - destructive, self - centered artists (or «
movies about jazz musicians,» as they're
more commonly known), the film is given a spark of
life by the inspired casting of Ethan Hawke.
But the Oscars and the public were far
more inclined towards the
movie about the single dad and the feminist mother who felt suffocated in the confines of her domestic
life.
This is the kind of
movie that makes you want to watch ten
more movies about these characters, splitting off in different directions,
living other stories in their
lives.
Although too intense for little children and too juvenile for older teens, The Neverending Story's message of using literature to explore real
life issues coupled with a discussion
about the balance between a growing imagination and keeping one's feet an the ground, could make this
movie more than just the ultimate in escape fiction for «tweens.
But in trying to make a 10 - best list, I tripped right over my own divided soul right at the top: My two faves of 2016 are Jim Jarmusch's Paterson, an infinitely gentle - souled
movie about the poetry of
life and the
life of poetry that finds
more pleasure and meaning in ordinariness than most
movies do in extraordinariness, and Yorgos Lanthimos» The Lobster, a perfectly sustained dystopian sick joke
about the desperate, poignant futility of seeking human connection.
The treatment also makes the
movie feel
more like a portrait of
life in Sweethaven than a tale
about Popeye, even if he's often at the foreground.
Jeff Nichols ««Loving,» on the other hand, is a
movie that looks like Oscar bait on paper (a drama
about an interracial couple in the South in the 1960s who went to court for the right to
live together) but plays far
more subtly than that.
Other things preserved:
more of the mime (Eric Stoltz), who gets into a fight and can't shut up at the music club; nutty rantings by Debbie (Sheila Kelley)
about men's apartments; David (Jim True - Frost) having his penis examined by a doctor he tips and
living his
life like a French
movie; and a downbeat new arrival to the singles complex.
David O. Russell's «The Fighter,» starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale, is an in - your - face —
more exactly, in - your - eyes - and - ears —
movie about a celebrated real -
life blue - collar boxing family.
So after five
movies and
more fanboy hype than just
about any
movie to be released this year short of The Dark Knight Rises, does The Avengers
live up to the hype?
