This is
more of a romantic comedy drama so while there's laughs, don't expect to be crying from laughing so hard.
But at one point we have to demand something
more of our romantic comedies than these pre-destined, overtly diagrammed movies with charming actors who are simply going through the motions and delivering one - liners that Saturday Night Live would have thrown away.
Not exact matches
We pretend that
romantic comedies or naturalistic thrillers set in the present day are
more «realistic» than any that require us to remember that we live between immensities, for no
more than a fraction
of sidereal time in a world that we did not make.
In fact, the Christian merchant is
more of a Pharisee in his self - assured moral and spiritual superiority than is the Jewish usurer, and this ironic tension adds bite to the gaiety
of this
romantic comedy.
The film, which hits theaters February 16, is a modern twist on a
romantic comedy (boy and girl meet, fall in love, but then break up, and are suddenly reunited, ending up in that awkward stage where they have to debate whether to wave hello while taking out the trash), but it's also a particularly female spin on the coming

of which we're only beginning to see onscreen as
more women carve out a place for themselves in writer's rooms and director's chairs.
A return to
more lighthearted Allen, the charming
romantic comedy incorporates some elements
of fantasy (which we won't spoil here) and stars Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams.
Director Ron Howard brings his usual light touch to the proceedings and manages to hold the viewer's interest even through the narrative's oddly action - packed final third (ie once the truth about Hannah's character is revealed, the film becomes
more of a thriller than a cute little
romantic comedy and there's even a chase sequence as the army attempts to capture the mermaid / woman).
And even
more unfortunately, the improbable new
romantic comedy team
of Steve Carell and Keira Knightley works about as well as you'd guess — like oil and water.
What reads like a standard
romantic comedy premise is transformed, in the hands
of master filmmaker Denis, into something altogether deeper,
more poignant, and perceptive about the profound mysteries
of love.

of the latter (if anything I'd say its closest relative is his

Which makes it all the
more painful to see him saddled with this unsightly mess
of a
romantic comedy that can't even come up with a worthwhile recipient for all his attention.
