Professor Flechsig
of Leipzig (who perhaps
more than any one may claim to have made the subject his own) considers that in other special convolutions those processes
of association go on, which permit the
more abstract processes
of thought, to take place.
But, as this is a very
abstract argument, I
think it will help its effect to say a word or two about the
more concrete conditions
of the case.

Research by several other students is revealing that middle - school science students solve

thinking in terms
of metaphors or models — for instance, by using a nail, a wire, and a battery as a model

of very different language,

In order to get my students
thinking in
more abstract and artistic ways, and to help me
think about how to engage
more of the school community with this project, I spoke with my school's art teacher, Christina, who traded spots with me for a day to lead a session for my class on conceptual art and technique.
But while observers
think it's promising that many lawmakers are now recognizing the importance
of social and emotional skills, many are worried that measuring whether students have become
more persistent, resilient or compassionate could be much
more difficult and
