This app has been requested for a number of years and authors who publish their fan - fiction
on Wattpad can now
design their own
book covers more intuitively than ever.
But thanks to this snazzy
cover design, I think this may be one
book that's
more fun to read
on paper than
on an e-reader.
I could pull samples from the 25 top small presses and publishers, showing off their ugly
cover designs, to demonstrate what a poor choice these options are to authors (since the
cover will be the biggest factor in your
book's success, and small presses or services that charge a publishing fee skimp
on quality
design to make
more money for themselves).
Of course the
book cover should be well
designed too, so before you spend $ 100
on book marketing, consider spending that money
on a better
cover instead — it might make
more sense.
More food for thought — You may be able to
design something beautiful yourself but many published authors who
design their own
covers use images that are often seen
on other
covers, use cheap tricks or non-professional fonts... the end result is a a
book that screams self published.
I would add
on the side of traditional publishing that 1) It is easier to get national publicity because producers give
more weight to a traditionally published
book, particularly from a larger house (though some self - published authors certainly do get national publicity as well — it's just harder, in general and 2) a traditional publisher is generally going to bring a great deal of experience to the table — from improving the
cover or title to layout and
design.
