What is less clear to me is why complementarians like Keller insist that that 1 Timothy 2:12 is a part of biblical womanhood, but Acts 2 is not; why the presence of twelve male disciples implies restrictions on female leadership, but the presence of the apostle Junia is inconsequential; why the Greco - Roman household codes represent God's ideal familial structure for husbands and wives, but not for slaves and masters; why the apostle Paul's instructions to Timothy about Ephesian
women teaching
in the
church are universally applicable, but his instructions to Corinthian
women regarding head coverings are culturally conditioned (even though Paul uses the same line of argumentation — appealing the creation narrative — to support both); why the poetry of Proverbs 31 is often applied prescriptively and other poetry is not; why Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob represent the supremecy of male leadership while Deborah and Huldah and Miriam are mere exceptions to the rule; why «wives submit to your husbands» carries
more weight than «submit one to another»; why the laws of the Old Testament are treated as irrelevant
in one moment, but important enough to display
in public courthouses and schools the next; why a feminist reading of the text represents a capitulation to culture but a reading that turns an ancient Near Eastern text into an apologetic for the post-Industrial Revolution nuclear family is not; why the curse of Genesis 3 has the final word on gender relationships rather than the new creation that began at the resurrection.

The teaching that men are to be the «spiritual leaders» of their homes is found nowhere

I would posit that, based on the many stories I hear from

more likely that abuse is flourishing
in patriarchal homes and
churches where
women are given little voice and little recourse; it's just getting swept under the rug rather than named and confronted.
But what's most dangerous about this posture is that Piper seems to assume that because evangelicals aren't confronting sexual assault and abuse the way that Hollywood is, then those things must not be happening

more power and influence.

more resistant to
women's leadership; these reasons are related to some of the basic differences between small and large

The rationalization of southern baptists is truly mind boggling — the idea that each
church is «autonomous» as justification for outright racism is pitiful
in this day and age — if the Southern Baptist convention had come out strongly and adamantly against this kind of behavior, I'd have at least a measure of respect for them — but to shrug off a blatant act of discrimination as the «work of the devil» and ignore the deacon's cowardice
in wanting to avoid «controversy» is laughable — if it weren't for people having the courage to fan the flames of controversy,
women and african american would not have the right to vote today —
more evidence of the ignorance of most bible thumpers, and Mississippi
in particular
The second reason why
women must get
more engaged
in this discourse is because they have something radically new to offer — a new way of understanding society, of human relationships and even of being
church.
I. H. Marshall goes so far as to suggest, following E. Laland, that the story was used
in the early
church to give instruction to
women entertaining travelers.80 Hospitality should involve
more than a sumptuous banquet.
She refers to the man
in his 40s who divorces his wife because her commitment to
church and to gardening and her dislike of tennis make him doubt that she will be a sufficiently amusing partner to cheer his retirement years; a young mother who admits that her husband is her best friend, but who divorces him because she no longer feels very romantic toward him; a
woman who marries someone she doesn't especially like because she fears she may never find anyone better and then, after having several children, does find someone
more to her liking.
For a
more helpful model, see Williams The Apostle Paul and
Women in the
Church.
I think the concept that
women are receptive, passive, surrendering (or
in any way
more moral
in the religious sense than men are) is charmingly naive, despite the dominant female presence
in church.
A
more curious inconsistency is the unwillingness by some evangelicals to apply their hermeneutical method equally to the question of
women in the
church and to the question of
women in the family.
I can hardly bring my - self even to attend
church any
more, partly because of the all - male language and symbolism of the services, partly because
women are expected to stay
in the kitchen and the
church school classroom and the pew, and partly because even the Bible seems to make
women inferior.
But the increasing presence of
women with feminist sympathies
in positions of leadership
in the
church may open the way to
more radical changes
in due course.
Stirred by the steady stream of feminist literature which has caused a revolution
in Western society, and prodded by the
more liberal wing of the
church which opened up the discussion on the ordination of
women twenty or
more years ago, contemporary evangelicals have become increasingly interested
in reevaluating the role of
women.
