In the golden age
of the late Sixties, no
film commentary
of any
sort reached
most of the households in
most of these markets (although faculty members on the local campus knew who Kael was, and huddled over the glow from their 16 mm projectors like monks in the Dark Ages treasuring manuscripts from far lands).
If you grew up as a horror
film fanatic in the 1980s, you may have run through
most of the American slasher flicks and occult thrillers — and then you rented Lucio Fulci's 1980 cult favourite Zombie, which hopefully led you to all
sorts of gore - laden apocalyptic mayhem from Italian splatter - slingers like Umberto Lenzi (Nightmare -LRB-...)
On that latter note, KHNH has been a trailblazer
of sorts on the global marketplace, opening up territories that had previously not been so receptive to Indian
film fare —
most notably, Germany, where this
film's massive success established a major market there for Bollywood, which has now become a bit
of a mainstream entertainment staple there.
In her second such turn
of the year in a distaff ensemble
film (both written and directed by men; the other, Casa de Los Babys, also with Gyllenhaal), Marcia Gay Harden appears as some
sort of fruitcake and walks away with the
film as the
most interesting fabrication in director Mike Newell's dyspeptic fabulism.
The Medallion is one
of the
most forgettable
of Jackie's
films, neither funny nor exciting enough to garner any
sort of distinction.
Moonlight, from Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney, won the WGA Original Screenplay award last night, a coup
of sorts since the
film was moved over to Adapted by the Academy (where it's Oscar - nominated) so
most felt the WGA race was between La La Land and Manchester by the Sea.
The subject matter, Day - Lewis» casual - seeming brilliance, the collective authority
of a supporting cast that could scarcely be improved: These elements energize Spielberg's picture, easily his
most accomplished since «Minority Report» (a rather different
sort of film) a decade ago.
The
sort of problem Sontag has with Jameson is,
of course, the very argument Bordwell has with anyone from Slavoj Žižek to Jacques Lacan, evident in a comment he makes on his blog (but not in the book) that echoes directly Sontag's: «
Most of FRT [Zizek's The Fright
of Real Tears] offers standard
film criticism, providing impressionistic readings
of various [Krzysztof] Kieslowski
films in regard to recurring themes, visual motifs, dramatic structures, borrowed philosophical concepts, and the like.»
Britton has the
most quietly powerful scene — in which she and Bateman have the kind
of emotional honesty that other
films of this
sort (* cough * August Osage County * cough *) lack, but Hahn and Bateman have a sequence that almost equals it (and is far funnier in an uncomfortable
sort of way).
The popular narrative around this picture is the casting
of Matt Damon as some
sort of «white savior» in a
film about China's
most notable architectural achievement — except that it's not really about the Wall and Damon doesn't really save anything, though he does put to rest any
sort of debate about whether or not he's a credible action star... or even star star.
And
of course, that fall trifecta constitutes a competition unto itself, one that threatened to turn nasty three years ago when Toronto, irked by Telluride's early access to some
of the season's
most coveted
films, sought to impose a penalty
of sorts by restricting all Telluride - screened titles from screening the first weekend
of TIFF.
As in the
film, he contracts her for a week, but it's first and foremost as a fuck - buddy — the dinner and socializing are secondary, and if she isn't as good at that
sort of thing as
most of the girls he «hires,» he figures he's getting her at a fraction
of their asking price, anyway.
Nebraska will likely be remembered more for Bruce Dern's strong performance at the heart
of the
film than it will be for
most other respects, though it isn't the
sort of must - see turn that will garner popular interest outside
of Awards committees and longtime Dern fans.
Although the studio buried it on video, it's still better than
most theatrically released
films of a similar
sort, and if you find yourself watching all romantic comedies, no matter how dumb or contrived, you certainly won't be wasting your time with this one.
Perhaps the
film's
most shocking moment is when a mysterious teen demigod (
of sorts) simply lays out everything horrible that's going to happen to Colin Farrell's emotionally muted protagonist.
But this
film is
sort of special because it's based on one
of the master's biggest, toughest, and
most popular novels, and it somehow turned out to be one
of the creepiest, classiest, and
most well - received King movies in years.
They're
sorting through the dress rack at a thrift store and fighting in the way they do for
most of the
film, about how Lady Bird is a disappointment and about her mother doesn't understand her — and then they break off mid-sentence to exclaim over finding the perfect dress.
Retreading «Prisoners» territory to an extent that at times makes you wonder if they're two parts
of some
sort of Canadian auteur experiment that no one else is in on, what is lost in the transfer, however, is any
of the Villeneuve
film's subtlety or shading, and we are left only with its
most lurid, credulity - stretching highlights, with all other textures blasted out to snowy blankness.
The
film doesn't sugarcoat what's happening, simply because children are at the center
of the story, but
most of the story's gloomier developments are suggested — such as the realization
of what Halley does during her daughter's regular nightly bath, how the mother has tried to hide it from her daughter as a game
of sorts, and how Moonee, even with the truth
of it in front
of her, doesn't understand.
In terms
of narrative structure, the previous Spielberg
film that Lincoln ends up
most resembling is Close Encounters
of the Third Kind (1977), which while a more consistently entertaining
film still provided a dramatic change in pace and style at the end to deliver a long feel - good sequence as a
sort of reward to the audience for hanging in for that long.
While
most automatically assumed that the new script would be some
sort of horror - comedy, based on Green and McBride's inclination to aim for laughs in their works, the latter tells Cinema Blend that the new
film will carry the same frightening tone as the original «Halloween»
films.
Fogelman has penned a lot
of animated
films (including Bolt and Tangled), but Last Vegas
most conjures up the same
sort of bittersweet mix
of first loves, lost loves and the swollen hope
of new romantic possibility that also marked his Crazy Stupid Love.
Retreading «Prisoners» territory to an extent that at times makes you wonder if they're two parts

The
most common complaint about the 2013's The Purge — even among those (like me) who otherwise liked the
film — is that it
sort of wasted its very clever «all crime is legal for one night» premise by focusing on one fairly basic «home invasion» story.
Directed by Gordon Douglas and written by Richard Landau, Up Periscope possesses all
of the beats and plot twists viewers have come to expect from a
film of this
sort - with the inclusion
of sequence in which the crew has to remain quiet to avoid detection the
most apt example
of this.
