I have to first admit that I've been a little reticent to post about this, not because I'm not excited about it, but because homebirth in our culture is not seen as a safe or wise choice (though in reality it is as safe or safer than
hospital births in
most cases — there are a
number of studies that indicate as such).
(Even if someone is not present with you in your room,
most hospitals have central monitoring where providers and nurses can watch fetal heart rates from any
number of places.)
And
most of all, because there are NO guarantees, one way or the other - the
numbers on safety and well being with home births are better than those in the
hospital.

of a new requirement, starting September 3rd, that will «keep tabs on the
number of bottles that participating
hospitals stock and use — the
most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.»
But on reflection, it strikes me as perfectly possible that a fair
number of the
most compromised babies, who would end up ill or disabled (for whatever reason) if born in
hospital will simply die if born at home.
The problem there is that babies who are transferred too late due to the incompetence
of a homebirth midwife or merely being too far away and then die in the
hospital (
most certainly as a result
of the homebirth) are counted as
hospital deaths and therefore the
number is far too low.
I feel as though this simply makes the
most sense, and what a
number of homebirth advocates tend not to mention is that midwifery in European countries and the UK is frequently controlled through
hospitals - you can request a midwife, but odds are you're giving birth in the
hospital, with an attending ob on call, and the midwife is sanctioned by the
hospital.
The
most important thing we learned that can be very helpful in creating change is this;
hospitals are sensitive to a certain rating based on the
number of complaints (or not) received by patients.
