The heterogeneity
of language development in this population has been well documented, and although
most children are delayed in the onset
of their first words (Roizen 2007),
others have found that some
children start using words at a similar
age to typically developing
children (Chapman 1997).
This pathway is characterized by three elements: the onset
of conduct problems (such as developmentally excessive levels
of aggression, noncompliance, and
other oppositional behaviour) in the preschool and early school -
age years; a high degree
of continuity throughout childhood and into adolescence and adulthood; and a poor prognosis.1, 2 The
most comprehensive family - based formulation for the early - starter pathway has been the coercion model developed by Patterson and his colleagues.3, 4 The model describes a process
of «basic training» in conduct - problem behaviours that occurs in the context
of an escalating cycle
of coercive parent -
child interactions in the home, beginning prior to school entry.
For
children living in poverty, although parenting has been shown to be a consistent predictor
of later
child functioning,
other factors in the
child's social environment have been found to contribute independent variance to
children's adjustment, effects that are not accounted for by parenting.15 Such factors include parental
age, well - being, history
of antisocial behaviour, social support within and outside the family, and beginning around
age three to four in Canada's
most impoverished communities, neighbourhood quality.16
Young
children are
most at - risk: Nationally, one - third
of child abuse and neglect victims are under
age four, and they are far more likely to be abused or neglected by a parent or guardian than any
other person in their lives.
Only Mendelson et al. (1995) and Turner et al. (2005) used similar self - report questionnaires
of the parent —
child relationship but studied a different
age group (i.e., adolescents), while
most other studies relied on parents» reports or observational measures
of family factors.
