Other than the PA series,
most of the gags mainly involve The Conjuring, Insidious, Sinister, and The Possession,
most of which are now a couple of years too old for anyone but the staunchest of
horror movie fans to remember.
For me and, I think,
most viewers,
other horror movie villains like psychotic killers and deadly animals are simply no match for the faceless unknown that feels like a more plausible and insurmountable threat.
Most festivals try to program films that bring celebrities to town,
others try to program every last film they can think of, but Fantastic Fest is all about the people - the
movie lovers with real grit, who love to find great films even if they're
horror flicks from Spain or hip hop musicals from Japan.
It's a good idea, yet the
movie, despite its oppressing vision of an urban gothic landscape, turns into a fairly standard
horror tale — with visions, which might be repressed memories come to life or phantoms from the
other side, terrifying the characters with little logic (It's strange that the original — or, for that matter, this remake — doesn't consider the
most obvious possibility: brain damage).
It's a very serious
movie in some ways, but in
other ways it's hilarious and it's also quite scary in a way that
most horror movies are not scary.
Insidious is recommended only for the
most easily - frightened of viewers who go to
horror movies solely so they can have their significant
others jump in their seats and grab them out of the sudden surprises, or if they are alone, to crap their own pants.
All the characters where there: The jock, the hot chick, the pothead surfer, the brain, and a few
other cliché archetypes that
most horror movies still find a way to include to this day.
