scenes of Kyle's childhood and transitions into an opening act that is loaded with full - on patriotism that sees him go to
war to get back at the people who brought suffering to our doorstep in the events of 9/11 (he was already enlisted, but if we believe the film that decision was also motivated by seeing news footage of American lives being taken), but one of the
most interesting surprises is how balanced it eventually becomes and how we see the way that Kyle's actions negatively impact others and how even he begins to question his commitment to the cause, despite the fact that he would never vocalize it.
The film wages
war on the nerves across multiple fronts, creating a state of regular disorientation through its scrambled visual grammar (like the mismatched eyelines during Lena's bewildered first
scene at the compound) and the distant remove of
most of the performances, Portman's included.
There's no shortage of themes here — particularly fascinating is the way service in different
wars affect how the veterans perceive one another — and the Thornton / Epperson team write a lot of nice, long
scenes between the characters that make the
most of the stacked ensemble.
The film's
most bizarre moment comes in the final
scene, when Martin returns home after the
war to find his friends in the process of rebuilding his house.
The documentary is mainly comprised of interviews, many with the director himself in his apartment, but the highlight for
most will be the
scene of Tarantino and De Palma talking about the similarities in their careers of having to deal with public attention regarding the violent content in their films (this comes after an extended sequence featuring Tarantino explaining his love for De Palma, which includes a personal scrapbook of printed interviews and a description of the influence that Casualties of
War had on certain elements in Reservoir Dogs).
His journey includes some of the

Terry Notary's daring work as a man living as a monkey (not too far - fetched considering his past roles in «Kong: Skull Island» and «
War for the Planet of the Apes»), is the film's
most enthusiastic and earnest
scene that can stand brilliantly as a short film rather than a part of the film's ultimately flawed structure.
