By 1961, Baltimore schools had changed from an overwhelmingly white enrollment to
a mostly black population and still had many segregated schools.

For decades white people with money fled the city for the suburbs, leaving behind a
mostly brown and
black population that was often bereft of resources.

While KIPP serves a majority of
black students, Hiawatha's student
population — spread out at the elementary and middle school levels, with a new high school set to open in the fall of 2018 — is
mostly Hispanic (89 percent of students).
But although its ranking improved and the math and English scores of
black students rose, critics and researchers have pointed to the fact that the scores of white students — who make up about 85 percent of the state's student
population — remained
mostly stagnant on both NAEP and the ACT.
While this lack of proportional diversity exists in several professions, when your job focuses on leading a
mostly black and Latino student
population to succeed academically and socially in a predominantly white society, race matters so much more.
