movies about a group of friends who are in the midst of trying to accomplish their dreams and fulfill their aspirations, but feel stuck or even worse, know they don't have what it takes to make it out of their

about his childhood, his

Getting ready for this trip got me thinking
about Gus Van Sant, who has set so many of his
movies in his adopted
hometown in the Pacific Northwest.
Set in Gerwig's
hometown — the
movie opens on a black screen with a quote from fellow escapee Joan Didion, «Anybody who talks
about California hedonism has never spent a Christmas in Sacramento» — «Lady Bird» hits the mark of the American teen
movie while quietly reaching toward literary effect.
