For us, the only change this year is no more
school lunches — i had hoped it would introduce Josh to a
good variety of
foods but they give the kids far too
much choice for their ages and he wasn't making
good choices.
Allison — Normally I'd write a
much longer answer but since I'm in the middle of this pink slime petition campaign, let me point you to one of the
best resources on the Internet for people getting started in trying to improve
school food on a local level.
I want to thank the reporter, Claudia Feldman, for taking time to speak with me about issues I — and most of you — care so
much about: trying hard to feed our kids
well in a less - than - healthy
food environment; improving
school food; and yes, my pet peeve of
food in the classroom for birthday treats or performance rewards.
The idea behind FOCUS is simple: large
school districts procure so
much food that they have considerable market power (second only to the U.S. military when it comes to
food purchasing), which FOCUS helps them leverage to pressure manufacturers into producing
better food.
Even students who pay «full» price for meals don't pay the real / actual cost, there is reimbursement to
schools even for «full» price students (not as
much as for free or reduced, of course), as
well as support in the form of donated
foods.
We DID spend months changing our recipes, writing the portions, training our 100 + culinary staff, so in terms of work, it is hard to calculate how
much that has taken out of any
school food service that tries its
best to cook from scratch.
And you can see in my post that I did my
best to ascertain, at least for France, how
much schools are actually spending on
food.
I don't think this is so
much a matter of whether there are
much larger or important issues regarding the state of
school lunch
food but rather just a
good place to start.

WITS was careful not to approach DOE with a «we know
better» attitude, while DOE, in the words of Executive Director Easton, was «secure and completely open» in its embrace of WITS, whose vision for improved
school food very
much matched DOE's longterm goals.
They took their
food fight straight to the
school board today, saying
schools are feeding their minds
much better than their bodies.
School lunches are not
much better and teenagers have access to soft drinks and junk
food from vending machines throughout the day.
I have been indulging far too
much on really
good food in Korea, Singapore and Malaysia and I'm looking forward to starting a new healthy eating and exercise plan for the rest of the
school holidays.

A few years ago our yellow top bins were also being used by some students as

well as work within the

much of this by the students themselves, teaching others) this is no longer a problem.»
Although the most popular lunch in every
school I visited is pizza, it is hard to make
good pizza without a professional pizza oven — so the kids get the stuff
much like you'd find in the frozen
food department of your local supermarket: prepackaged and filled with additives.
There is so
much good work being done to improve
school food by people in
schools around the country.
This plan will delineate the roles, responsibilities, actions and timelines specific to each
school; and include information about who will be responsible to making what change, by how
much, where and when; as
well as specific goals and objectives for nutrition standards for all
foods and beverages available on the
school campus,
food and beverage marketing, nutrition promotion and education, physical activity, physical education and other
school - based activities that promote student wellness.
Carla, Veterinarians have a 3 day course in nutrition put on by Iams and purina while they are in
school — they know about as
much regarding nutrition as your family doctor does.You have to use books, etc to research what is a
good formula for home
food and, I firmly believe, rotate ingredients regularly!
