I forgot to add that you use
much less coconut flour than called for with all purpose flour or whole wheat flour.
If you don't have any coconut allergies, you could try using that, but you would need to use
much less coconut flour than the 1 cup of almond flour in the recipe.
If you want to try though, make sure to use
much less coconut flour!
Michelle, I haven't played around with this recipe using other flours, but if you can tolerate coconut flour, that may work (if you want to play with the recipe, start with
much less coconut flour because it absorbs more liquid than almond flour).

A simple one - bowl recipe, the cake's main ingredient involves

flour, which absorbs moisture so well that you can get away with using
much less (also saves on ingredient amounts, which is always great!).

flours I wouldn't use are almond and
coconut, only because they soak up a lot of liquid and I wouldn't know how
much to use (you usually use
less of these
flours in recipes because of this).
So you get
coconut milk and
flour and it's
much less expensive than buying both.
You could certainly experiment with replacing the
coconut flour with something like oat
flour, but I have no idea how
much, and I'm pretty certain they'll be
much heavier and
less fluffy.

If hazelnuts are
less absorbent than almonds and
coconut flour much more so, you could experiment with mixing the two — my suggestion.
Perhaps there was too
much coconut flour for the amount of liquid used, this can happen with eggs weighing slightly different amounts which can throw the liquid off a little or if there was a little
less liquid added / extra
flour added.
A
much healthier and
less toxic version would leave out almost everything you suggested and use things like almond or
coconut flour or even healthy protein powder and be sweetened lightly with local raw honey.
