Due to its World War I setting, Wonder Woman is often as
much of a period piece as it is a superhero film.

Moreover, it goes on doing this for a
much longer
period than we would expect an inanimate
piece of matter to «keep going» under similar circumstances.
For our purpose the important aspect is simply that in view
of this long
period of investigation we are able to look at the Bible in a
much more intelligent fashion, without assuming that it is «all
of a
piece».
As if on cue, a swell
of new oaters has tumbled into view this year to prove as
much, and each
of them in their own way plays less like a
period piece than it does a mirror.
There's
much discussion about how the film is supposedly a game changer, how it's more in tune with the current zeitgeist as opposed to the traditional narrative strengths and linearity

The
period is nicely captured — though never heightened — by Edward Lachmann's grainy, shallow - depth Super 16 photography, while
much of the mood - setting is achieved by Sandy Powell's wonderful clothes and Carter Burwell's soundtrack, which is reminiscent
of Philip Glass's spare but highly emotive piano
pieces.
Most
of his working - class ensemble
pieces are set very
much in the present day, but following the success
of his Gilbert and Sullivan biopic «Topsy Turvy» (1999)-- which was inevitably set in the past — Leigh has once again turned to
period drama with his latest work, «Vera Drake» — without ever abandoning the ideological concerns
of his more contemporary films.
It's been quite awhile since a broadcast network has managed to sell viewers on a
period piece set prior to the 20th century, so the fact that ABC is even considering this series, which takes place in 1895 and revolves around the first luxury hotel in New York, is proof
of how
much pull executive producer Shonda Rhimes has with the American Broadcasting Company.
Much has been written on Robert Eggers» exemplary
period piece, so I'll keep it brief: The Witch is a quiet horror film
of subtle plot machinations and subtler characterization.
You do a lot
of research no matter what it is, but for a
period piece... and especially a biography, where you're pretty
much representing real people.
It's a
period piece that feels remarkably present, a little bit
of magic from the master that allows the film to become a parable as
much as it is a history.
You won't find
much subtlety in the solid

piece drama «Marshall,» but you will find plenty
of crowd - pleasing courtroom theatrics, some wonderful performances from the main players — and yes, all sorts
of reminders
of how far we've come in terms
of race relations since the early 1940s, and how very, very far we still have to go.

If «120 Beats Per Minute» is inescapably a
period piece, a flashback to a moment when AIDS was decimating the gay community in
much higher numbers than it is today, the movie nevertheless unfolds in a brisk, urgent present tense that refuses the consolations
of nostalgia.
The film is set 42 years before the events
of the first Despicable Me, which pretty
much makes it a
period piece, too.
Who we want to win: Though it could be a close one between Tim Burton's cinematic realization
of the beloved stage show Sweeney Todd and the staid
period piece Atonement in the category
of Best Costume Design, there's no getting around how
much we're still thrilled by Burton's wacky designs after all these years.
Wright has been
much praised for bringing a modern energy to
period pieces (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement), and he animates the hothouse atmosphere
of Churchill's gilded cage with thoughtful debate and vigorous visuals.
One star for the fabulous performances and another star for the rich and gorgeous cinematography
of this
period piece, but it's a subject matter I don't
much care for, and it's very difficult to summon sympathy for one that probably got help to wipe one's own arse.
Now she's set for her most stellar
period yet with leading roles in two major BBC series: Peter Moffat's military
period piece The Last Post, which startson Sunday on BBC1, and an upcoming adaptation
of The Woman in White, as well as a
much - praised big - screen turn in an atmospheric crime thriller, Beast, which will screen at the London Film Festival's First Feature Competitionin October.
I've seen my students get excited about their work when they're able to talk it out with peers, but I've also seen how
much they need a quiet, calm environment so they can write significant
