EBook formatting is a technical process for the most part, so adhering to the 80/20 rule
of maximising your time with contracting the work out is going to be
much more efficient and far less stressful.
We take the stress out
of finding your
eBook cover, editing and
formatting your work, paying for those irritating ISBN numbers and so
much more.
Throw poor
formatting into the mix and your
eBook has about as
much chance
of being read as someone does proving the world is flat.
Warshaw talked about some
of the reasons why there isn't as
much focus on digital content for teen readers since a lot
of the non-fiction
format doesn't come through as easily in
ebooks as it does for other types
of books.
I'm not seeing
much in the line
of academic writing getting picked up by the audio
ebook format.
As if that's not bad enough a lot
of the time
ebooks that you spend good money on are horribly
formatted by the author or publisher, and if the
ebook has DRM there's not
much you can do about it.
If you intend to publish your book in multiple
formats (meaning perhaps a hardcover version, a paperback version, and an
ebook version
of the same title), you will need individual ISBNs for each version, in which case, buying a block
of ten ISBNs is a
much better value.
Regarding the release
of HP in
ebook format: I doubt very
much if anyone cares about any financial implications from delaying the release.
Copy / paste, sharing passages, and generally moving files from one place to another is
much harder with
ebooks than with other digital goods, because
of a combination
of constraints in the EPUB
format, digital rights management, and device / platform lock - in.
After years
of wanting this feature, Smashwords launched (Dec. 2012) a
much needed improvement to their system — Smashwords Direct allows the support
of ebooks that «contain richer, more sophisticated
formatting».
She added that the impressive sales numbers for the first six books
of The Godling Chronicles series in both audiobook and
ebook formats, and their sustained sales over the past four years, convinced Audible that even a six - figure advance was not
much of a risk.
In the last five years Amazon have, in addition to dominating online bookselling, bought a book social network, a major print - on - demand supplier, a complete end - to - end self - publishing system, pretty

I've had books in the top 100 in both
ebook and print
format, and the feedback loop is
much more powerful in
ebook in my experience (maybe because
of instant gratification, maybe because
of lower price, maybe something else).
There were several key design features that Bright Little Labs needed to maintain in the
eBook, though, so we worked closely with them to preserve as
much of the original
formatting as possible in reflowable
formats.
Keep in mind that
ebook readers expect
much more in terms
of flexibility and compatibility, therefore
formatting your work as an
ebook should remain a completely different task from
formatting it as a hard copy.

I like
ebooks as
much as the next person but until until the big boys adopt one single std
format that you can use on any device, and is not limited to x number
of machines I doubt
ebooks will really take off.
