Though the supporting cast doesn't have much to do — save for Ana de Armas, who's slowly becoming an actress to watch between her work here and in last week's «War Dogs» — it's filled with veteran actors like Blades, Turturro, Ellen Barkin and Reg E. Cathey (as flamboyant boxing promoter Don King) who know how to make the most of their limited screen time.

The monkeys make up a supporting cast of their own and this makes the final showdown on the bridge so much more amazing.

The rest of the supporting cast is pretty much wasted, including a miscast Maggie Gylenhaal, Richard Jenkins, and the always fun Michael Murphy (where has he been?).

I've held the unpopular opinion for a while now that Leonardo DiCaprio finds himself in similar positions often, where he's a perfectly fine and solid actor, but is often cast across from much better actors in the supporting role and tends to seem underwhelming as the lead of the film.

Luckily Brando and Harris — the film's weakest characters — are supported by a fine cast of British actors, and the decision to film their scenes on an fully functional reconstruction of the Bounty pays off much in the way directors Peter Weir and Fraser Hestion were able to extract rich atmosphere through the use of real ships in Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) and Treasure Island [M](1988), respectively.

In a zippy supporting cast there's much to enjoy in the matchmaking toucan, a serenading canary (with a bottle - top for a hat) and a gang of thieving monkeys, whose chief wears a gold wristwatch around his waist, like a prizefighter's belt.
