It strikes me now that this attempt to teach theology in the church was preoccupied, as is
much of theological study, with methodological questions — What is theology?

Until that late period in my
theological studies I had been unable to make
much sense
of biblical exegesis.
On the pluralism side, the proposal here is, quite simply, that a
theological course
of study would be
much more adequate to the «pluralism
of pluralisms» characterizing the Christian thing if every course in it were deliberately and explicitly designed to address one
of the three questions invited by Christian congregations and the array
of types
of congregations were broad and rich.
I know it's a stretch, but that is why I spent so
much time laying down some
of the
theological and hermeneutical principles earlier in this
study.

theological studies and is unlikely to provide
much illumination for the majority
of those tempted by the widespread publicity to invest in a copy.

This
theological perspective is
much broader and more sweeping in scope than what appears in the X chromosome
study which does not ask about the total orientation
of the human self.
A real conundrum I find with Christians
of various
theological persuasions is that they harp on how we must be engaged in
studying the Bible, how the Bible is our guide in life, and hold the Bible on a pedestal,
much like rabbinic Jews hold the Torah or Catholic hold up their Eucharist, but when it comes to the nitty - gritty
of how they have come to know God, no matter how they explain it, it ends up being on the basis
of experience.
The
study also included an effort to determine how
much agreement exists between individual members» views and the official
theological positions
of the church, first by interviewing theologians to determine what the official positions were, then by surveying pastors to see if these positions were taught, and finally by surveying members about their own beliefs.
There are few
theological schools where these groups do not compete for the students» interest and time, where some members
of the former group do not feel that the scholarliness
of theological study is being impaired by the attention claimed for field work and counseling, where teachers
of preaching, church administration and pastoral care and directors
of field work do not regard
much of the
theological work as somewhat beside the point in the education
of a minister for the contemporary Church.
