much experience as I can in my chosen field,
science communication, while still ensconced in the ivory tower.

Results of the study by Janet Yang, a University at Buffalo expert on the
communication of risk information related to
science, health and environmental issues, suggest that holding a collective, communitarian belief system contributed to altruistic behavior, while those who hold more individualistic values are less likely to be altruistic regardless of how
much risk is triggered.
Its major finding was that most parents actually want pretty
much the same things from their schools: a solid core curriculum in reading and math, an emphasis on
science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, and the development in students of good study habits, strong critical thinking skills, and excellent verbal and written
communication skills.
They simply leave out too
much that matters, including other academic subjects, like social studies and
science, electives, as well as an array of skills and capacities we expect students to be developing, such as critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, collaboration,
communication.
Blogging is a great
communication tool and I very
much appreciate your work with this one, but it could also be a slippery slope that could lead to the degradation of
science, simply because most of the end users don't understand the scientific method.
I traded e-mails this morning with a
communications director from a major climate NGO who said this about the whole current «discussion»: Kind of symbolic of how
much time the community spends talking about how to communicate
science versus actually trying to communicate
science.
My comment was directed toward leaving even traces of alarmism out of AGW
communications so that only the
science can be attacked, which is
much harder to do than attacking language.
But I think the
much bigger problem is that there is no «basic
communication» when it comes to climate
science.
One of my Pace University
communication students, Martin Totlandt, spent
much of the summer in South Africa and filed this «Your Dot» dispatch about the controversy over the process of chumming — luring sharks with a fishy, bloody brew spooned overboard — something done both for
science and for adventure tourism cage diving operations.
In my studies on
science communication, I've learnt a lot about how the human brain works — we base our beliefs as
much on our values as on scientific evidence.
The complex relationship between
science,
communication and policy (which is not as linear as some might think or wish it to be) and the complex relationship between
science, advocacy and silence is however little understood (and quite easily misunderstood) and needs
much more research.
The arguments will continue about whether Chernobyl was as
much a failure of
communication, planning and politics as it was of engineering and
science.
I don't think the public is all that confused or that better understanding and
communication of the
science would change
much in the way of policies that the public would support.
(b) Although this matter has received a good deal of media and political attention, I have always regarded it as essentially a single graphic case study illustration of a
much larger pattern of Administration interference with and spinning of climate change
science communication.
It was the concern about this linkage that seemed to underlie
much of what I perceived to be the Administration's intervention in managing
communications by the Climate Change
Science Program.
That's why more detailed
science communication is important; it can play a role in improving understanding, even if it doesn't actually make
much difference to people's overall views (i.e., the failure of the deficit model).
Over the years he has shown a concern for maintaining a strong scientific research and assessment program on climate change — something to which few members of Congress pay
much attention — both in proposed legislation and in calling out political interference with climate
science communication.
That may be interesting as a social
science experiment conducted on consenting adults, but it is not
much use as a guide to effective public
science communication, constrained as it is to tell the truth.
Better
communication requires that climate
science learn from other fields that have done
much better (people like Randy Olson, Matt Nisbet study this sort of thing.)
Then there's this juicy bit of «
communication»: ``... it suffices to say that the climate scientists have little doubt about the human impact on the climate...» Of course, like so
much science non-
communication, this is followed up by some vague qualifying about extent etc so you don't really know if the first bit is a sly consensus message or just a truism.
