Although
life seems to have only taken 500 million years to arise on Earth, the move from simple bacteria to complex
multicellular creatures took another 2.5 billion years, and technological intelligence has
appeared on this planet only once.
The fossil record suggests complex
multicellular life emerged about 600 million years ago in a relatively short period termed the «Cambrian explosion,» during which most major animal phyla
appeared.
