One of the goals of this work is to measure the force generated by a single
myosin molecule pulling against an actin filament.

Recently, the combination of these two techniques has produced a new generation of experimental setups enabling the simultaneous manipulation of a biological substrate (for example an actin filament or a DNA
molecule) and detection / localization of an interacting partner enzyme (for example
myosin or a DNA - binding protein).

How binding of a small
molecule can increase the performance of a muscle by promoting an increase in
myosin motor force was unclear.
Complementary collaborative work between Cytokinetics and the team headed by Anne Houdusse has also uncovered how highly specific small
molecules can stop smooth muscle
myosin activity.
This causes the two main protein
molecules (Aktin und
Myosin) inside the muscle fibres to move relative to each other resulting in shortening (contracting) and lengthening (relaxing) muscle movement.
