Thus Bultmann rejects, while HBK accepts and affirms,
the mythological elements in the Bible.
This problem of the interpretation of
the mythological elements in the New Testament is not in itself a new one.
There are also
mythological elements in the story of Jesus.

If he is prepared to take seriously the question of God, he ought not to be burdened with
the mythological element in Christianity.

The mythological element in the kerygma is not, we have shown, the importation into the New Testament of ideas from non-Biblical religions, ideas which could be eliminated or superseded by interpreting the underlying understanding of human life.
And again, through the work of other scholars like Bultmann and Buri, with their frank recognition of
the mythological element in the biblical story, we have come to see that the affirmations of Scripture have their abiding significance, not in spite of, but precisely because of their being stated in language which can only be described as highly metaphorical.

Bonhoeffer believed the «historicity» of the Resurrection was
in «the realm of ambiguity,» and that it was one of the «
mythological»
elements of Christianity that «must be interpreted
in such a way as not to make religion a pre-condition of faith.»
While there is some
element of truth
in this, it is only so because Israel herself necessarily reflected
in her earliest period the traits of the
mythological origins from which she emerged.
In such instances it would be wrong to set aside the
mythological element because of its supposed incompatibility with modern thought.
I regard a Christology as modern if it uses every relevant insight of modern knowledge to differentiate the historical
element in its interpretation of the event Jesus Christ from the
mythological, and remembers that the actual event comprises only history and the ontological reality of God's presence and action within that history — whilst the mythology expresses that reality
in ways which may indeed convey deep truth, yet have
in themselves the status not of ontological reality but of poetry.
In fact, it is only by such an interpretation that the real meaning of the New Testament can be disclosed and made accessible for those who would otherwise find its
mythological elements a stumbling block.
By «
mythological» I refer to the suprahistorical
elements in the story which came into being within the Christian community as the only possible way to express this transcendent and redemptive meaning of the event.
The Christian confession involves all three
elements, and we properly understand the meaning of the term «
mythological»
in this connection only if the truth and importance of the other terms are recognized.
But
in Chapter 8 it was suggested that the abandonment of the
mythological elements did not necessarily mean the end of «myth».
