n FORESTS uses an SNES art style and a
chiptune soundtrack to recreate the look and feel of one of the most cherished consoles of all time.
Even when Berkman picks his songs apart to describe their emotional weight, he finds folders full of goofy teenaged experiments (including a surprisingly good
chiptune cover of A-ha's «Take On Me»),
not to mention the story of lead single «Meow»'s accidental genesis.
Although what isn't open to question is the quality of the game's superbly versatile
chiptune soundtrack.
It gives me
not only a greater respect for
chiptunes artists, but for all those nameless, faceless programmers who provided the soundtrack to my youth.
Andy: I'd love to see more genre experimentation in the
chiptune scene in general, whether on Kickstarter or
not.
It's also got a wonderful, retro aesthetic, a silly story, and a hyperactive
chiptune soundtrack that I can't get out of my head.
Whilst I didn't recognise any of the electronic music on show, the
chiptune music of Kubbi and the light rock of Shiny Toy Guns made for easy listening.
At least there are some nice creature comforts — for example, the ability to independently change the style of graphics or music to classic sprites and
chiptunes or newer art and higher quality music tracks — nice if, like me, you're
not a fan of the newer art.
They mainly stick to various forms of EDM with some
chiptunes and rock tracks here and there, so if that kind of sound doesn't appeal to you, the game may be a tough sell, but I found a lot to like.

n FORESTS will take all the best and beloved elements of the 16 - bit era and combines them with modern game design, a
chiptunes soundtrack and a nostalgic look and feel.
So we thought, why
not tap into that retro vibe and cook up an optional
chiptune version of the entire Mighty No. 9 game soundtrack, including classic sound effects?
The combination of
chiptunes and live instruments may
not be a new thing these days, but the duo of Jeffrey «jmr» Roberts and Mikhail «streifig» Ivanov that make up the band Marshall Art helped to master the the concept in the past handful of years.
While it might
not feature any classics from lets say, the old Mega Man games, the «
chiptune» band Anamanaguchi took it upon themselves to make one hell of a rockin» MIDI soundtrack, with some drums and guitar throw in here and there for the more dramatic moments.
Chiptune darlings «George & Jonathan» have just put out a follow - up to their debut acclaimed album The Best Music from last year (
not counting their wonderful Christmas released), Beautiful Lifestyle, and you can stream it for free in the embedded player above — or buy / download it on Bandcamp for $ 5.
Also, I hope the
chiptune remixes of Linkin Park's songs aren't anything like what's in the trailer; those tracks sound awful.

The repetitive and annoying grungy
chiptunes and the lack of story didn't do anything to motivate me either.

Composed by Jake Kaufman, It's a phenomenal piece of
chiptune wizardry, and I personally can't stop listening to it... even when I'm
not playing the game!
We're
not in the NES era where the weak soundchip limited us to
chiptunes, nor the SNES / Mega Drive one where MIDI songs with samples were the only thing that could work on the console hardware.
While
not necessarily easier to produce than the average music track, the
chiptune style of music works really well with the pixel art graphics to deliver a complete retro feel.

Mario and his Mushroom Kingdom cronies were all bouncing about on each other's bonces to cheery
chiptune music, while SEGA was the ostensible renegade pushing into more mature markets, with its totally -
not - on - drugs - while - this - shit - got - made likes of ToeJam & Earl and a mutant hedgehog with a kleptomaniac magpie's eye for gold rings.
Chiptunes are pretty awesome, so why
not incorporate them into a game?
So, I assume they aren't manufacturing these cartridges anymore, and I've interviewed people in the
chiptune scene who were manufacturing DIY Game Boy carts and stuff.
Though I've never played The Adventure of Link, this recurring dungeon theme (sometimes called Palace) just does so much within the limits of 8 - bit
chiptunes that I just can
not ignore it.
The music also has a nostalgic, retro feel to it, although the game doesn't feature actual
chiptunes like a lot of titles that use this visual style.
With a subtle blend of both action RPG & puzzle elements, hand drawn & pixel art styles plus
chiptunes & symphonic score, we can't wait to see how this iOS game out of Dallas, TX turns out!

Sure, it's easier to appreciate it in a sweeping orchestral arrangement like Dragon Quest VIII, but even as a
chiptune in the original game, the music and especially the theme is perfect: epic, heroic - sounding, and passes the important test of being able to be heard a billion times throughout the game on repeat and
not get annoying.
I certainly can't see some niche title with (often distorted)
chiptune versions of copyrighted songs having a substantial effect on sales of the original works.
Though I don't recognize the names of any of them and could imagine myself getting a little sick of
chiptunes after several hours.
It uses synthesized music instead of
chiptunes and contains a nice balance of melodic and atmospheric tunes that are fun listens that don't leave much of a long term impression.
