dry, and I also had to add some fruit syrup, as the
dates I got were a bit
dry and
not sweet enough.
I made these today but had to substitute a few ingredients as I didn't have everything — I used
dried prunes instead of
dates, chopped almonds and hazelnuts instead of the sunflower seeds and vegetable oil instead of coconut oil.
I haven't tried these without
dates before but I imagine that prunes or
dried figs would work well too x
I'm
not sure frozen berries will work as they'll let out too much water but pieces of
dried apricots or
dates would be delicious!
I made your sweet potato brownie tonight, but substituted 2 large bananas for
dates (since I am on a low FODMAP diet for my IBS and should
not be consuming excess fructose from
dried fruit).
The mixture was really
dry (however still in the oven so I haven't tried it yet) so should I have put 400g worth of
dates in ignoring the 20??
Soaking the
dates shouldn't change the flavour but I would try making them with
dry dates to see if that makes a difference.
Then, without cleaning the vitamix, I blended up the wet ingredients (including the
dates and a hunk of ginger because I did
not have
dried ginger).
Just made it for breakfast this morning, replaced the
dates by
dried figs cause I didn't have any, and the almond butter with powdered almonds... It is a killer!
I also used normal
dried dates with a tiny bit of hot water to make them softer as I didn't have medjool
dates.

Sadly
dried dates don't work properly most of the time as they're just
not soft enough, the texture is pretty different so the effect just isn't the same — sorry!
I think you could replace the
dates with
dried figs for example or prunes but I haven't tried replacing the coconut oil with anything that would be good enough to recommend.
I have a question about
dates, as I don't particularly enjoy their taste, can I replace them with

dates and
dried fruit are quite expensive and
not my preferred go to, would it be possible to sub them for some sort of non-
dried fruit puree like applesauce or bananas?
I didn't need to use any additional water, but if your
dates are on the
drier side, you might need a bit of water to help all the ingredients stick together.
If your
dates are
dry and hard, they won't blend as well and will require soaking in warm water first in order to soften them.
Unfortunately
dried dates won't work for this recipe as they won't blend into a smooth consistency in your food processor.
Umma would say that in those days (early 80s), she has seen the maids at the Arab houses would have a huge pot outside the house kept on a makeshift stove, with fire from

At first I thought the combination of a
dried date and peanut butter sounded gross, but then I tried it and wouldn't you know, I couldn't stop eating them!
Deglett
dates or any other non-juicy
date won't work — they're far too
dry.
My
dates were very sticky but older
dates can
dry out so if yours are
not sticky, soak them in hot water for 20 minutes and then drain before using.
Since I didn't have quite enough
dates, I supplemented with
dried cranberries.

not, they're lower in sugar than most all other

You say «fresh»
dates in one part of the recipe: those are
not easy to come by, will it also work with
dried dates as long as they are soft and fleshy?
We haven't tried it with
dry dates, but it should work, the taste would be the same.
I really thought I had messed up when I thought the dough was too
dry so I added probably 1 / 4c water in the beginning —
not to mention I thought my yeast might be to close to the end of it's usable
date so I upped the amount to 1tsp, (plus I added a dash for good measure because I really like a yeasty bread).
For those of you who don't know them, think rolled oats, coconut, tons of
dried fruit (apricots, cranberries,
dates, etc), honey, sunflower seeds... YUM!
If you can't get Medjool
dates, you can use Deglet Noor or other
dried dates, but you might want to increase the amount.

dried figs for the crust, you can substitute 12 - 14 medjool

I found this step to be totally worthwhile, but if you're
not up to it you can do any of the following: (1) simply omit the chips, in which case the granola will be nonetheless delicious, (2) buy a bag of banana chips and toss them in, though watch out for fried banana chips, which you are welcome to use, though they will add significantly to the recipe's fat content, or (3) throw in some alternative source of
dried fruity sweet and chewiness, like raisins or
dates.
If you can't find tamarind paste, feel free to substitute with lemon juice mixed with puree
dates, prunes and
dried apricots (source).

Dates can be a little vexing to chop into pieces (and I don't like those «
date pieces» they sell, because they are mixed with flour and are kinda
dry) so I use scissors to carefully snip them.
That typically happens due to a couple of factors, but most often when the
dates used in the recipe are a bit stale and
dried out, since they are the binder it's important to use ones that are
