One reason some authors don't get their books reviewed is failure to acknowledge the review policy of the book bloggers.
But that doesn't mean you can't get your book reviewed.

Fast - forward to today: The
book hasn't
got a single
review on Amazon and has sold so few copies, it doesn't rank on Amazon rank.
Frankly, we're intrigued and can't wait to
get our hands on one, but that sentiment is tempered by venerable consumer product
review house Consumer Reports, which already is taking a pass on recommending the new Surface
Book because of problems with the original version.
I also have ten advance
review copies of A Year of Biblical Womanhood to give away, so if you don't win the ticket, you may at least
get an advanced copy of the
book.
I
got that
book to
review as well but haven't
gotten to it yet because I first received it when all that stuff was going on with my dad.
This didn't stop me from becoming excited when the opportunity was presented to me to
get a copy of Butter Celebrates: A Year of Sweet Recipes to Share with Family and Friends, by my friend, Jenny, who has organized quite a group of us to
review Rose Daykin's second
book.
I agree with a lot of the lesser
reviews of this
book, but felt that it still should
get four stars, whilst it has recipes which cooks and chefs would
not call recipes in the wider sense I don't personally think that Ella in both her
books is neccesarily all about the recipes.
But, she was happy my article didn't focus on what those secrets appeared to be about in her HuffPo piece — affairs — and the major emphasis that
got in the Daily Beast
book review, «Is Cheating the Secret to a Happy Marriage?»
I received a copy of this
book to
review back in April and I didn't
get a chance to read the whole thing, but my husband has been
getting a kick out of it!
The thing that really
gets me, though, is how often these negative comments (and even
reviews on my
books) include things like «the writer only tells why punishment is bad, but doesn't give alternatives.»
I was
not pregnant when I bought the
book but by reading it before I ever
got pregnant again was most helpful to me because now that I am pregnant I know right where to go to
review over certian areas again.
I don't normally do
book reviews because honestly, it's just so hard for me to
get through a
book nowadays.
I was happy to receive the
book to
review, figuring I'd read it and then give it to a friend with a new baby, but now I can't
get rid of it.
He gathered up the material that didn't make it into the
review, wrote a
book proposal, found an agent, and
got a contract.

Goodreads likes to make you think they will leave
reviews for your
books, but in general don't
get your hopes up.
Sure, you can send out
review copies and make
book trailers (
not for $ 150 tho), but if an author's end goal is to attract more readers — or even a publishing contract — they first need to
get their work in front of people who can help them, and that's what the IRDAs are all about.
The literary agents on your typical free
book agents list didn't ask to be put there, meaning they didn't post their profile or
review it — so the information that you're relying on to
get representation is outdated and / or incorrect.
Be wary, that in «building relationships» you aren't actually just being a jerk to people — reaching out and trying to
get them to
review or share your
book, asking for their help or feedback, and always being on the receiving end of favors.
After
reviewing Marni's material, it was clear that she had everything needed to
get a good literary agent, but
not necessarily a great literary agent and a great
book deal.
If you can't give your
book away for free, it's probably because you still haven't
gotten 10 +
reviews, or your cover is ugly.

get through at least one a week, often more, and I
review these
books for pleasure, usually on Amazon, sometimes on Goodreads (a site that's hailed as social media for readers, but to be honest I find it a frustratingly clunky site so don't go on there that much — and as it's now owned by Amazon, it may only be a matter of time before my Amazon
reviews are accessible from Goodreads anyway).
In one giveaway (
not on Goodreads) I gave away ten copies of a
book and
got zero
reviews out of it.
In the excitement of
getting the written word published, new authors sometimes don't edit their
book, and if they do work hard to
get people to buy the
book, they end up
getting bad
reviews because of the lack of editing.
I disagree with Kozlowski I
review books both from Publishers and Indies — and I think he has sour grapes, I do
not distinguish between whether the author has paid it all themselves — or whether they have gone the traditional route and been fortunate to be picked up — YES Indie Publishing means that the Author
gets the profits faster — BUT THEY HAVE PAID for Editors, Covers etc and had to market the
book themselves out their own pocket!
Giving away free or selling inexpensive copies is
not expected just because... it's a tactic for
getting exposure with the understanding that some of these copies will lead to
book reviews, which in turn helps
get more exposure and entree into certain marketing programs and options, and which helps prompt actual purchases as many readers are hesitant about buying a
book by an unknown, unreviewed author.
I'm sure these authors will develop a thick skin one way or the other should their
book get poorly
reviewed on Amazon or they don't generate the sales they expected (as do all authors regardless of path to publication).
If a small or self publisher
gets his or her
book reviewed by legitimate print or online journals doesn't that count?
They
got reviews that I couldn't because my
books didn't have the publisher name recognition.
Generally speaking though, I've
gotten much better about selecting the
books I read and
review which cuts down considerably on the number of negative
reviews I have to write.As for bad reactions...

reviews on Amazon.com and other similar retail sites aren't the only kind of
review you can
get for your
books.
There is, of course, no obligation to
review it; I appreciate that you must
get countless
books to
review and don't have the time to read and
review all of them.
Some readers want more concrete proof that your
book is worth buying and you're
not just pulling their leg, which is why
book reviews play an important role in
getting your
book known.
Be professional, target suitable reviewers, don't be pushy, demanding or frightening, and your
book will
get reviewed.
In MOST cases the reviewer will also state that they
got a free copy of the
book and that their
review was
not influenced by that fact that it was free.
It could take them six months to
get to your
book, they may change their mind and
not review your
book at all, OR they may write the
review tomorrow and forget to tell you.
