do not use oil based for chalk paint and make sure the paint does not have primer in it.
I want to try this method, I've been making my own chalk paint, and painted my china cabinet, and used the Minwax dark wax to antique it, it's not for everyone, but the look is just what I want, old world look, not even put it has character, I am doing my coffee table as well, I find very ornate pieces cheap and paint a base cream chalk paint and then go over it with the Minwax dark, let it sit for 15 min and buff, then add another layer of wax, its so much fun, but the problem I'm having is I'm ADD and I have 5 projects going at once!

Just make sure you're looking for chalk paint, not chalkboard paint, as they're two completely different things.

If you want to paint the deck with chalk paint you have to make sure the wood is not at all wet and the weather is not damp or humid when you are painting since this will add moisture to the wood.
I prefer making my chalk paint mixed using satin, but since you will use poly over the finish it really does not matter what sheen of paint you use to make the chalk paint.

Hi Kevin — I have not made black chalk paint yet, so I can not be sure.
Calcium Carbonate Powder will not, so use it when making chalk paint with acrylic craft paint.
You can use any sheen of paint to make chalk paint, but no matter what sheen you use, once you add the CCP it will flatten the finish so it will not be the normal semi-gloss.
This has only happened for me with Plaster of Paris, but not with any of the chalk paint making additives like Calcium Carbonate Powder or Chalk Line Marking pochalk paint making additives like Calcium Carbonate Powder or Chalk Line Marking poChalk Line Marking powder.

If you have the Oil - Based Alkyd Enamel then it will not work to make chalk paint.
If I want a super durable finish, I may add a little bit of Plaster of Paris to the mix, but not too much as PoP can (not always) make the chalk paint mix thick.

I haven't used any home made chalk paint myself so can't really comment on the Graco's abilty to cope with it I'm afraid.

I have been painting like CRAZY with chalk paint that I make using 4T plaster of paris, 4T water, mixed until smooth, added to 2 cups water based paint, be it satin finish, semi-gloss, high - gloss, doesn't matter.
I have never made my own chalk paint, but that does nt mean it wouldn't work.
How to: We wiped off the stone to make sure it didn't have dust or cobwebs, mixed the Annie Sloan Chalk paint with water to dilute it so the stone would retain more of the natural look, rather than a heavily «painted» feel.
Something that isn't always made known when using chalk paint is that wax needs to be reapplied every so often and if you make changes frequently, like I tend to do, the wax needs to be removed before you paint again.
Great post, Traci — the point you made is that chalk paint may not be the right choice for EVERY project, so how wonderful to have a color match in a latex paint!
Hey...... I realize this post is a year old but I was just reading today that you should not use baldpates paint to make chalk paint.

Note: When making chalk paint with Plaster of Paris you can not use a paint with a primer in it.
I am not afraid to try making my home - made chalk paint now.
I would get new paint — Satin finish always works well for me, but don't use Valspar as it has a primer in it and gets too thick when making DIY chalk paint mixes.
Hi Val — When making chalk paint with PoP, it can be a little harder to sand, not impossible, but you may have to add more elbow grease to get the painted finish smooth.
If adding whiting to paint made it stick better to surfaces do you not think that Bher, and Dulux and Pratt and Lambert would have done that already????? Adding whiting to latex just makes it look similar to chalk paint....

Gosh I would not try the chalk paint because of the cost but this makes it reasonable.
Hi Bethany — It really does not matter what the sheen of paint is to make into DIY chalk paint since when you add the CCP or PoP is will turn it into a flat sheen.
