I can't tell you how cool it feels to take control of a Mecha Dragon and outfit him with a second head, a jetpack and maybe even a device that freezes time whenever you roll some points, letting you take a second turn using one less die.

But I didn't know that, so I was thinking maybe a dragon sounds really cool, so I created a mecha dragon for Bahamut.

But don't worry if you haven't been keeping up to date, From Software decided that rather than continuing the story from AC4 that they would reboot the series and take the mecha franchise back to its roots.

This is not to be confused with Valsione R, which is a different mecha entirely.

This is not to say that the Gungriffon games haven't been critically lauded over the years but they haven't reached the broader appeal that something like Heavy Gear did for instance, despite both series sharing similar base rulesets for the mecha.

Overall then this is probably one of the best Super Robot Wars games out there, not least due to its spot on balancing but also because it nails its 80's fantasy mecha tone better than probably any other entry in the series.

Now, that isn't necessarily a bad thing to do and actually affords greater usage of the transformation abilities of the mecha themselves, which they thankfully did, but Traveller's Tales decided to make a raft of all new mistakes regarding how the core combat played out.

Doubly so when it's obvious that a lot of the art budget has been spent on sprucing up the mecha rather than the environments, so you not only play the same missions over and over again but also have to deal with multiple missions using the same bland environments.

It doesn't take away anything from the game especially when the game series has a storied history of mashing up a lot of mecha series.

This is not to say that the handling for the mecha is any way unwieldy but that each of their nuances require a fair amount of investigation.

This is not a damning indictment of Western mecha games either, as High Moon already proved it could be done well in this day and age, but that Front Mission Evolved was just really quite disappointing.
