I can't tell you how cool it feels to take control of a Mecha Dragon and outfit him with a second head, a jetpack and maybe even a device that freezes time whenever you roll some points, letting you take a second turn using one less die.
But I didn't know that, so I was thinking maybe a dragon sounds really cool, so I created a mecha dragon for Bahamut.
I'm usually not a fan of Mecha games.
But don't worry if you haven't been keeping up to date, From Software decided that rather than continuing the story from AC4 that they would reboot the series and take the mecha franchise back to its roots.
This is not to be confused with Valsione R, which is a different mecha entirely.
This is not to say that the Gungriffon games haven't been critically lauded over the years but they haven't reached the broader appeal that something like Heavy Gear did for instance, despite both series sharing similar base rulesets for the mecha.
Overall then this is probably one of the best Super Robot Wars games out there, not least due to its spot on balancing but also because it nails its 80's fantasy mecha tone better than probably any other entry in the series.
Now, that isn't necessarily a bad thing to do and actually affords greater usage of the transformation abilities of the mecha themselves, which they thankfully did, but Traveller's Tales decided to make a raft of all new mistakes regarding how the core combat played out.
Doubly so when it's obvious that a lot of the art budget has been spent on sprucing up the mecha rather than the environments, so you not only play the same missions over and over again but also have to deal with multiple missions using the same bland environments.
It doesn't take away anything from the game especially when the game series has a storied history of mashing up a lot of mecha series.
This is not to say that the handling for the mecha is any way unwieldy but that each of their nuances require a fair amount of investigation.
This is not a damning indictment of Western mecha games either, as High Moon already proved it could be done well in this day and age, but that Front Mission Evolved was just really quite disappointing.
That wasn't all either, Alpha 3 was the first Super Robot Wars game to feature mecha from another gaming franchise.
Energy consumption on the bigger mecha, especially the likes of Dancouga, also mean you can't have them take on waves of enemies indefinitely.
In short, this feels like a game aimed at mecha fans that are not overly familiar to the Super Robot Wars series and that in itself is no bad thing.
The games listed are also not necessarily based on our reviews either, as some we have yet to even cover, but more how they have defined mecha gaming over the years.
Not a great year for console mecha games, I was very dissapointed with how Lost Planet 2 turned out to be and now this, Front Mission Devolved has been giving me bad vibes since I've seen it, so no hope there.
Originally, Viper II was intended to transform but due to the technical limitations of the Model 2 board this wasn't possible, much to the disappointment of the game's mecha designer, Hajime Katoki.
While we're still not fans of the mecha design in the upcoming game game Rigs, it does look like it will be functionally good.
The studio found out that Tatsunoko, that originally provided the rights for Macross to Harmony Gold, probably wasn't in the position to assign any license for the mecha designs, which instead belong to Big West and Studio Nue.
The most obvious question, then, was whether or not From Software was making a new entry in its long - running mecha series.
While Starship Troopers» effects on the Real Robot genre can not be denied, the mecha in Lost Planet are very dissimilar to the novel's powered armor, which were extremely mobile through the use of long jumps powered by thrusters, and were capable of controlling square miles of territory through sheer firepower.
Naruto Storm 4: New Double Sharingan, Susanoo Kakashi Screenshots Naruto Storm 4: Boruto and Sarada Ultimate Jutsu Scan Naruto Storm 4: Demo Being Worked On, Mecha Naruto Won't Be In Game Naruto Storm 4: We Need a Downloadable Demo this Fall!
While the Starship Troopers movie, which had a radically different plot from the book, muddies this a bit, the original novel had a huge effect on both the mecha anime genre (more specifically, Real Robots) and the «space marine» trope that simply can not be overstated — they wouldn't exist in their present forms without it.
The Japanese are the current masters of mecha, but that doesn't mean Westerners are uninterested in the concept.
The trailer is pretty good actually, suggesting the game is further along in development than we expected, and showcases what appears to be a return to an open - ended - if not quite open - world - New York city, with plenty of web - slinging and even a few giant, multi-legged mechas thrown in for good measure.
During an impromptu interview held in a hotel bathroom, mecha fans» hopes for a new game in the Zone of the Enders series were dashed as Hideo Kojima explained that the project currently receiving his direct attention wasn't Zone of the Enders 3.
The principle behind the indie games movement was that developers not chained to the high stakes world of initial public offerings and demographics research would be able to create innovative games that users would want to play, rather than what users had proven in the past that they would be willing to play, and finally there is a mecha game on the XBLIG service that proves the indie movement right, because Explosionade is a love letter to the great 2D SNES mecha sidescrollers that adds just enough new gameplay mechanics to make it its own beast.
Could not all teams mean combinations of random characters such as 3rd Raikage, Kimimaro, and Mecha Naruto?
On paper, you'd think that hiring a Western developer to helm a standard third - person - shooter would be a no brainer but Front Mission, like any mecha based gaming series, isn't one that can slot neatly into a functionally standardised niche.
On the one hand the reasoning behind this choice is pretty obvious; as it means more gamers will have an easier time with the mecha handling learning curve but the downside to all this is that the mecha control will plateau very quickly in terms of player skill (something not entirely ideal for a game with online multiplayer).
One thing the new trailer does hint at which we haven't seen before is some sort of system that allows players to «glide» — while the huge mecha jetpacks enable characters to gain vertical height and sometimes forward speed (similar to the thrusters in Tribes, of which Firefall seems to be a spiritual successor) this seems to be an entirely new mechanic, used for crossing large amounts of distance in the air.
Unlike, say, From Software, Konami doesn't have the distinct advantage of being a mecha games - centric company, and it takes time and hard work to develop a team capable of delivering something on the level of Armored Core, and I don't think any company or game designer could perform that feat without giving the project their fullest attention.
Notably that of the mecha in Orguss, as both Kei and Olson's mecha have an aforementioned attack where they practically high five, however this isn't an option if you've placed Olson in another squad.
While doing a bit of research on the commercial version of Bootfighter Windom XP SP - 2, a freeware mecha game similar to the Gundam Versus series of game with an English fan translation, I found that not only was the commercial version already out, but it had received an official English translation all the way back in July of last year.
In a world exclusive, Mecha Damashii can reveal that Armored Core V will explain how the Raven's Nest began as a school for ninjas with a talent for falconry.
I can't speak to the actual quality of these games, because I'm not much of a shooting game aficionado, but what's most interesting to me is that all three of the mecha shmups are from the same doujin circle, ASTRO PORT, and all three feature entirely different mecha art styles.
First, there's the perennial «Tau Are Too Anime» debate which always crops up, and while you can not deny that the Tau were designed with at least some Asian influence, their vehicles and armor are a far cry from anything an anime fan would remark as traditional mecha design.
