Admittedly, this wasn't a mecha game per se (though it did feature a mecha Godzilla clone and huge alien tripods) but The Chikyuu Boueigun wouldn't have been created without Sandlot's previous mecha gaming outings.

I'm usually
not a fan of
Mecha games.
This is
not to say that the Gungriffon
games haven't been critically lauded over the years but they haven't reached the broader appeal that something like Heavy Gear did for instance, despite both series sharing similar base rulesets for the
mecha.
Overall then this is probably one of the best Super Robot Wars
games out there,
not least due to its spot on balancing but also because it nails its 80's fantasy
mecha tone better than probably any other entry in the series.
It doesn't take away anything from the
game especially when the
game series has a storied history of mashing up a lot of
mecha series.
This is
not a damning indictment of Western
mecha games either, as High Moon already proved it could be done well in this day and age, but that Front Mission Evolved was just really quite disappointing.
That wasn't all either, Alpha 3 was the first Super Robot Wars
game to feature
mecha from another gaming franchise.
In short, this feels like a
game aimed at
mecha fans that are
not overly familiar to the Super Robot Wars series and that in itself is no bad thing.
The
games listed are also
not necessarily based on our reviews either, as some we have yet to even cover, but more how they have defined
mecha gaming over the years.
Not a great year for console
mecha games, I was very dissapointed with how Lost Planet 2 turned out to be and now this, Front Mission Devolved has been giving me bad vibes since I've seen it, so no hope there.
Originally, Viper II was intended to transform but due to the technical limitations of the Model 2 board this wasn't possible, much to the disappointment of the
game's
mecha designer, Hajime Katoki.
While we're still
not fans of the

The trailer is pretty good actually, suggesting the
game is further along in development than we expected, and showcases what appears to be a return to an open - ended - if
not quite open - world - New York city, with plenty of web - slinging and even a few giant, multi-legged
mechas thrown in for good measure.

mecha control will plateau very quickly in terms of player skill (something

game with online multiplayer).
Unlike, say, From Software, Konami doesn't have the distinct advantage of being a
mecha games - centric company, and it takes time and hard work to develop a team capable of delivering something on the level of Armored Core, and I don't think any company or
game designer could perform that feat without giving the project their fullest attention.
While doing a bit of research on the commercial version of Bootfighter Windom XP SP - 2, a freeware
mecha game similar to the Gundam Versus series of
game with an English fan translation, I found that

With a MechWarrior reboot and Hawken still on the horizon, as well as a certain «core»
mecha series adding an unprecedented amount of online content, there may
not be room for another freemium
mecha game based on a series with simple, action - oriented
game mechanics.
Cheapass
Gamer also lists a PSN download code for Steambot Chronicles: Battle Tournament as being $ 14.99 at Amazon.com, although the PSP
game is a mere shade of the PS2 original Industrial Revolution - themed
mecha game and
not really recommended.
Thankfully, this doesn't mean the
game has been dumbed down; it remains the same hectic
mecha shmup crossed with the grand tradition of screwing your friends with a lightning raid of tanks right outside their headquarters.
These
mecha («mobile trenches») don't just hit the sweet spot between a lumbering machine and an agile player character avatar that all
mecha games aspire to, but the fact that your ride is an absolute behemoth means the turrets make sense.
Looking around a bit more, though, led me to discover that CuriousFactory, the fellows involved with that English release, have brought over a few other
mecha games in the past (link may
not be entirely safe for work, depending on how your employer feels about little cartoon girls wearing only a belt for a shirt), specifically three different shmups.
There are obviously crap Japanese
mecha games out there and most of those are to do with anime licenses, but almost all the Armored Core
games not to mention Virtual On as well as Steel Battalion are astoundingly good.
It's also why there aren't many
mecha games on the horizon, yet!
Mecha fans will love the number of customisations on offer and people who like Koei Tecmo's Warrior series» will enjoy the mindless combat in play, but don't go into the
game expecting a deep enthralling story and unique gameplay mechanics.
Not only did these Japanese
games introduce new gameplay concepts, they also reflected the culture surrounding their creation, introducing players from all over the world to new ideas like
mecha, aka, and giant robots.
It is pretty sad that there are
not many
Mecha games with this style these days.
Such as Hajime Katoki for one and
not to mention the Yutaka Izubuchi designed Hygogg kit on his disk, all of which clearly shows in terms of the
game's overall aesthetic for the
mecha.

games, but it also features
mecha.

mecha games on 360 and PS3.

game even lets you choose from a small set of premade robots if you're
not into building: a car, a
mecha that walks like a chicken, a T - Rex that walks like a chicken, and a chicken that walks like a chicken.
This obviously being a shame because the
mecha design by Kow Yokoyama and the retro - stylings of the
game's visuals are pretty damn impressive,
not to mention the fluidity of the gameplay.

For those somewhat confused as to what these
games have to do with
mecha, well the simple fact is that without Sandlot's prior expertise (and subsequent technology base) in the genre the EDF
games wouldn't exist.

First off, it's worth clarifying that the Gundam Musou
games aren't the first (or the last) that have offered playable
mecha but without the attempt to re-create their abilities.
This doesn't mean that the studio isn't making
mecha games anymore but that there are no official announcements of
games to that effect.
Since the release of the various Carnage Heart
games, Artdink hadn't made
mecha games and never ventured into the full - blown action orientated gameplay the genre is known for (admittedly the OKE's in Carnage Heart were potent war machines, the player wasn't in direct control of them).
Mecha Showdown replaces traditional buttons with a slot machine mechanic in this robot fighting
game, but the thrill of the gamble just isn't there.
