It's
not every day that you get to
swim with a Whale
Shark.
I personally wouldn't let my own children
swim with sharks, no matter how controlled the environment.
But the biggest treat arrived while I was snorkeling afterwards, when I was treated to a
swim with a whale
shark — a filter feeder,
not a predator — so close that our local guide, Diego, could pet its dorsal fin (I have my limits).
But bottom - dwelling fish, such as barred sandperch, which are favored by some
Shark Bay dolphins, don't have
swim bladders and so are harder to find
with echolocation.
After all, I did

sharks in Mexico a few weeks ago, so long sleeved romper, you don't scare me!

To be honest,
swimming with whale
sharks wasn't on my radar, until I interviewed Amanda Castleman for my Break Into Travel Writing podcast.
Breakfast — You'll be waking up early to

sharks which means there won't be much time to grab breakfast (or anything open this early).

sharks in Mexico isn't perfect though and you'd be hard - pressed to classify it as eco-tourism.

sharks in the Philippines, getting married in Greece, and going to Japan
with my wife when she was pregnant
with our first child.
Haven't seen whale
sharks in person and I really want to see and even try
swimming with them.
I wrote earlier about my experience
swimming with the dolphins at Mirage and was planning to write about diving
with the
sharks at Mandalay Bay today, but I can't seem to find my photos.
Both divers and snorkelers can
swim with these giant whale
sharks in the pristine and warm waters of southern Belize without any risk from these magnificent creatures as they do
not pose any significant threat to humans.
Even though
Shark's Bay is a little more overrun by tourists, the waters are filled
with colourful fish that seemingly don't mind people and love
swimming right under you.
I ended up
not snorkelling
with the whale
sharks, which was a shame, but I wasn't confident enough in my
swimming ability so I stayed by the beach and soaked up some of the coral reefs instead.

There is little doubt that if (and when) Nyad completes her record - setting
swim, she does
not want it tainted
with controversy over the killing of
sharks that were seen as a threat.
In January, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago Charles Evans argued that Bitcoin is «
not money - like», and Bitcoin investors are «
swimming with all the
sharks in the world because of all the anonymity.»
